For anyone who is buying a lil' chunk of ginger root as a filler, find a bit that has started sprouting a bit (see photo below). Chuck it in some soil with the sprouty bit facing up and it'll grow into a lovely ginger plant! :j
I don't think it'll grow outdoors in the UK, but I quite like the look of it... It reminds me of bamboo.
The photo below is of a few pieces I planted two weeks ago, so it is fast growing.
Once they are a bit bigger, I think I will plant them all together in one big pot?

(edit: sorry if the photos are huge! I can't work out how to make them smaller from Tiny Pics?)

I grow ginger. It does like sun. your plants will flower.....a pinkish flower, once it dies back, your ginger root is ready to harvest. You are right, they need sun and are best grown on a window ledge, conservatory or similar. I wouldn't put them all in one pot, I'd leave them as they are now. The roots need room to grow :)

Thanks fairclaire. I will just leave them as they are then. I just did this as an experiment and wasn't sure if it would keep growing?
I have a bit of turmeric root sprouting too. Have you ever grown that?

I'm lucky I have a sunny window sill. I've grown some really nice salad, rocket etc this year. :j
