The main thing which doesn't add up with this story is that there is no airline in the world which would allow a passengers suitcase to travel without the passenger.

That issue points to a lamentable failure of security by Thomson Airlines.

I wonder if when the father got home the grandparents were horrified he'd left his wife to cope alone and insisted he went back and now the insurance company have informed him this action isn't covered this whole story is an attempt to cover costs.

Kids get ear infections all the time especially if they've spent too long in the pool on holiday. It's common sense to not fly until the infection recedes as there is a risk of burst eardrums. Doctors in holiday resorts deal with this all the time and the fact the child was allowed to fly after only four days implies the infection responded quickly to antibiotics.

This sounds more like a couple of teenagers on their first holiday abroad and panicking rather than an adult couple away with their children . Odd sort of honeymoon.

Lots of guesswork going on here...
Acute ear infections often don't need antibiotics ..

OP asked for opinions abut the predicament that her son (IIRC) had found himself in. It was duchy's opinion (and many other posters) that the parents didn't behave in a mature way at all which is surprising given that they're old enough to marry, have two children and take them on honeymoon with them. What's odd about thinking that?

Actually, I am a medical professional. Antibiotics take 24 hours to kick in.

I have a son who was prone to ear infections when young. Unfortunately, his father was gone most of his childhood (the Bosnia conflict), I guess I am remiss, I managed alone with a toddler in a garrison town 1000km from my family.

The more I think about it the more ridiculous it sounds that the father had to fly back out with clean clothes. I don't think I've ever seen a resort that didn't sell t shirts and shorts galore as well as washing powder.

I'm leaning towards an attitude from a past generation who felt that a woman couldn't possibly cope with a moderately unwell child alone for a few days. Grandparents assuming insurance would cover the extra flight and now discovering it won't. If this had happened in a third world country with scant medical facilities and a language barrier it might be more understandable. In the Med...... No !
