She didn't say he HAD to, she said " incidentally he did " .
There are uk 5 star hotels and other not so 5 star hotels .
As for contacting the concierge, well we'll have to see what the op says about that.0 -

I once stayed at a very high class five star hotel in the UK, the concierge couldn't even find me a pair of scissors to cut a tag off a gift.0 -

Agree you have to take star ratings with a pinch of salt and I wouldnt expect even an upper end 5* to bother getting the local department store to open specially, come across with stock and wait until 11pm for one of their customers who'd staying one night in their budget room. As always there are levels within levels but even a basic place that has a concierge should be able to do something like a tshirt from the local shop.I once stayed at a very high class five star hotel in the UK, the concierge couldn't even find me a pair of scissors to cut a tag off a gift.
Name and shame, its inevitable that not all customers are equal but something basic like a pair of scissors is simply laziness.0 -
I can understand the mother feeling a bit lost and distressed to start with but most adults in that situation would soon get a grip and sort themselves out. The child wouldn't need much in a hot climate and clothes could be washed through in no time. Other holiday makers would probably have rallied round with a few nappies to see her through for a few hours. Surely she'd have some bits packed ready for the flight anyway? My DH's bag got lost last year and the hotel manager lent him some shorts and a shirt while we awaited for it to turn up.
I find the whole business of the husband flying back out incredible. The child had an ear infection, very common with swimming pools, so hardly a life threatening condition.
I apologise if I sound harsh but I find it frustrating that the OP wanted to blame Thomson but the mum wasn't prepared to help herself. Massive over-reaction IMO.0 -

You conveniently missed off the last half of that sentence where they state the reason the son flew out with clothes was because the insurance company didn't tell them they could buy necessities out there and claim them back.
I can see why you may think some of the responses are abrupt, but they're completely correct. Thomson has no responsibility to look after them in that situation whatsoever - nor would I expect them to. They are fully grown adults, they should be able to make basic arrangements themselves, sick baby or not.
To me, it seems like the couple managed the situation terribly (I'm not saying they're generally inept as people - just during this one incident, we all make mistakes) and are seeking someone to blame for it. As others have advised - leave Thomson out of it (unless you have some evidence of the poor hygiene highlighted - in which claim some compensation as a "goodwill gesture" from them) and claim for all your expenses via the travel insurer.0 -
I used to work as a sub contractor for holiday insurance companies repatriating holidaymakers when unable to travel home as scheduled.
I find this whole tale a bit unbelievable. Either there's a bit of exaggeration going on or the parents panicked. The parents apparently contacted the insurance company to know that the father and older child wouldn't be covered to stay on, yet didn't contact them before booking another flight out to bring out a change of clothes. I've not travelled on a package for years but do passengers not retrieve their bags at the departure airport to check in....and if the child was already ill why even allow the bags onto the transfer bus? Surely you'd hold back a bag of necessities and why not just rinse clothes out instead of flying out more clothes or buying locally. Sounds more like Dad flew the older child back and left them with someone and chose to return with Mum and Baby which is understandable.....and might even be covered if Mum wasn't coping...but that ship sailed with the claim that the reason was to import clean clothes for a mere 2 or 3 days . Not sure why the pool in the hotel was so vital as with an ear infection lo shouldn't be in the pool anyway and if the child was ill Mum would hardly be lounging in the pool either.
Claims do need to be reasonable and believable.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

TBH, it does add up, its panicking parents with a bit of headless chicken syndrome hence people flying about the place rather than making simple phone calls etc.
Unfortunately as most people arent being supportive of the OP's outrage at the situation I suspect we wont have further up dates on the matter.0 -
Several things about this incident surprise me.
First up, and this is purely a subjective opinion,I wouldn't leave my wife and sick child behind in these circumstances - especially if she didn't have the wherewithal to cope with only four days without any luggage.
Surely people take credit cards and extra cash with them on holiday to cope with any unforeseen circumstances ?
I'd also be surprised if a reputable holiday company and an insurance company would wash their hands of a client in these circumstances - the reps may have been busy on changeover day and instant solutions can't always be found but still I can't believe they " abandoned " them.
Flying back out with spare clothes for a baby just sounds bizarre - likewise an insurance company saying the family has to split up and not be accommodated together while there's a problem.
Once all the so-called hygiene problems that were only just noticed by his wife after the incident are thrown in and I get the impression not all the facts are known here and there's a bit of a compensation claim going on.
However, it doesn't surprise me that we have formed a society where entitlement seems to be the norm and at the first sign of a problem it's someone else's duty to sort it out - I was returning from an airport in Spain last year on a flight delayed by 3-4 hours and couldn't believe a couple were demanding help from the airline because they had no money to buy drinks for their kids. literally they'd spent every last penny on them before boarding the coach to the airport.
Mind you,they were from Liverpool.0
