Yep... It's frighteningly infectious in the symptomatic stage.

I think that's something like 150 infections of medical personnel so far, and 60+ deaths.

And most of them knew what they were dealing with.... So took maximum possible precautions against infection.

    Happens every time though?

A disease like this comes along every few years, kills a few hundred people in Africa, burns itself out, and the world gets complacent.

    Until one day, it spreads....

The newspapers go on about a death rate of 90% yet the death rate there is <40%.

    Beware hysteria.

Apparently six people are being tested for Ebola in New York according to CNN. Hopefully all negative!

In terms of the economics of ebola - what an odd title. Are we supposed to debate whether an outbreak will lead to an increase in GDP per head or a house price crash as the demand for housing falls?

No, that would be 'Ebola and house prices'. There is an economic impact of disease and health. Some is cost of labour lost, aid when given. Insurances. Etc etc This is already having economic impact in businesses worldwide which interact with that mRket. quite besides the horror of Ebola, there is an economic impact.

Just because we're not discussing it :o. Doesn't mean its not there.

This board is for debating the economy and house prices.

Off topic threads are moved elsewhere.

As ebola (or any other significant disease outbreak) will have an economic impact, by including that aspect we can keep the thread here while also discussing the social and moral aspects.

I thought the current figure was 55-60 percent. Not the sort of odds I would like to face and even those who don't die may have ongoing health issues?

The death rate seems to be ~40% from HAMISH_MACTAVISH's sample.

If medical practitioners taking maximum precautions can't protect themselves then does it make sense to try to provide treatment?!

Yes. It's not a binary can protect / can't protect. And if a lot more people are treated and isolated / quarantined, that still makes it a worthwhile thing to do overall. Medical personnel are an awful lot less likely to catch it than a mother / wife / son / brother nursing someone at home.

Confirmed death, not confirmed Ebola, AIUI?

It is on the BBC site:

Suspected Ebola victim dies in Saudi Arabia
