I'm sure people whose dogs died from heatstroke in hot cars thought they "used their judgement" too. There's a lot more awareness about leaving dogs in hot cars these days so I'm amazed that people think it's ok to leave their child in a car!

    "Most people do it"... Really??

No one said you were neglecting your child.

Plenty of reasons above why it's not such a great idea (overheating, car being stolen, technical fault with car), but here's one more....

I had my husbands car (his old one which we no longer have) one day and parked it outside my Mam & Dad's house. The next thing we know a neighbour comes rushing in and the car had rolled down the square and had had come within inches of crashing into her house! the handbrake had failed. Luckily no one was in it and it didn't hit the wall, but there could have been and it could have done.

You may be totally on the flat so obviously that might not apply, but there are so many things that could happen. Plus, like someone else mentioned above, babies aren't meant to sleep in car seats for long periods of time.

Most people I know leave their child in the car to sleep in their driveway in the small town where I live. It is not dangerous as long as you use your judgement.

If trying to prevent a childs death in a car is narrowminded, then you can tar me with that brush too

Letting a baby sleep alone in a car is NOT normal - it is irresponsible. Most people do not do it and am not suprised by how horrified people are

You shouldn't be doing this, & you know it - that is why you are so defensive. You say you are 'using your judgement' well once you have walked into the house, the monitor is not going to tell you of the soaring tempretures inside the car, is it!!!

Your only reasons to do it is because 'once he is up, he is up' so what, for a bit of quiet time for YOU, you are risking your childs life. Very selfish that you would rather your child be asleep??

Get a grip Op and look after your child - he does not exist for your convenience
The opposite of what you know...is also true

Yes, people do leave their children asleep in the car BUT they also stay in the car with them as I used to do when mine were small.

Buy a kindle, when the child falls asleep, stay in the car and read a good book.

It's what we do when we don't want to risk DS waking up by trying to transfer them to bed.

We left ours in the car sleeping. Our drive is in the shade but again using judgement, as well as a hot day, would not leave a baby/toddler on a cold day.

They are now 18, 14 and 10. We left the the front door and middle door open. They all fit and healthy.

Our neighbours let theres sleep in car but sit in car reading paper while child sleeps.

Can you get a portable carseat. So when you park up you unhook and carry inside.

I am shocked it is common to leave a baby in the car alone on a drive but mine is16 now so I am behind the times.

Sorry, but I see it as neglectful and I would never leave my LO alone to sleep in the car. If she does fall asleep, we take her out and try to transfer her to her cot.

Regardless of how good your judgement is (or isn't) the people on this thread do show that many people do think leaving a baby or toddler asleep in a car unattended is neglectful and there's a good chance that so will some of the people around you so the odds of you getting reported to the Police or Social Services for neglect for doing it are pretty high.
