The iphone that you suggested could be used as a monitor can also be used to make phone calls whilst sat in the car!

My DD would wake up at any noise louder than a whisper. If you haven;t had a bad sleeper then you will never understand. I would do anything not to wake her up during a nap as being woken resulted in at least a day of hell for me. At least. It was bloody awful and contributed to my PND.

I'm pretty zen about risk, but I once read a powerful article in the Washington Post about parents who kill their children by leaving them in the car and it's never left me.

Regardless of how good your judgement is (or isn't) the people on this thread do show that many people do think leaving a baby or toddler asleep in a car unattended is neglectful and there's a good chance that so will some of the people around you so the odds of you getting reported to the Police or Social Services for neglect for doing it are pretty high.

Somebody did this while collecting their older child from nursery (at a surestart centre) and the family were reported to social services. The mum mentioned it next time she came to toddler group with the baby, expecting others to say that they did the same, only to be met by shocked silence.

I don't drive, so for me things were easy because it would be a pram he fell asleep in, but if he fell asleep while we were in the car then one of us would sit and read a book in the car until he woke up. To be honest it was bliss, those moments of being unable to leave the car, having 'free' time to myself where nothing else was expected of me :T

Reading a book is silent, and can be done without waking a child. Leaving a child in an unattended car us neglect end of, if reported you face prosecution, rightly so, SS look at if that if you cannot judge risk then your child could be at harm from other parenting decisions. Harsh perhaps, but true I'm afraid.

i too have a terrible sleeper-but i pull up on the drive and lift her out, hoping beond hope she might stay and snooze on my shoulder :o

about 3 months ago i was parked outside my friends house, LO and i were inside drinking tea without a care in the world, and some idiot took the corner too fast and ploughed into my (husbands) parked car

would i take the chance of ever leaving a baby in a car without me?

    NO WAY

To leave a child sleeping in a car is disgraceful.

You just have to search to bring up lots of stories of children that have died in cars.

Thought it was bad enough people had to be reminded to not leave dogs in cars but to then to come on here and see a thread asking for help allowing you to leave your child in the car is shocking.

Death, theft or someone hitting the car could happen. Surely the safety of your child is more important then you getting some time to yourself while you have abandoned your child in a car.

If I knew where you lived I would report you to social services.

    Very very good point.

I had a car completely written off a few years ago by a drunk driver who was speeding down the road and bouncing off all the cars parked along the pavement.

There was no way to see it coming, and no way to intervene to stop it or prevent the damage, the car was just smashed and wrecked in a second.

    Stuff like that does happen.

It's not necessarily a drunk driver either.

I know three people, of a variety of ages, who crashed into stationary vehicles because the sun had blinded them for a few seconds.

None of them were drunk - all were breathalysed.

Thankfully, no one was seriously hurt in any of those incidents.
  • OP why don't you ask social services for their reccomendations of a good monitor to assist you when you leave your child alone in the car. I'm sure they would be happy to help.

There are probably millions of parents around the world who also have bad sleepers, not an excuse to abandon the child for what? an hour of peace?? what if something bad happened would that hour have been worth it??
Bad sleeping probably contributed to my PND also, but didn't mean I would leave my son ALONE in a car!! You can make every excuse under the sun, it won't make a difference, it's highly irresponsible.
  • and to the people saying oh if its warm I leave the windows down - yeah cos that's so much easier for someone to kidnap your child!! look at the mccanns (not that I believe them) oh we checked every 1/2 hr or whatever it was as if that's acceptable. A child unattended is neglect. Simple as.
