The 0845 number is a premium rate number with a 2p per minute Service Charge plus an Access Charge of up to 12p per minute from landlines or up to 45p per minute from mobiles.

Since 2009, Samaritans in the UK has had a telephone number which is free to call from landlines and from mobiles. That number is 116123 but it remained unadvertised until very recently.

Since 22 September 2015, Samaritans in the UK have been advertising 116123 as their main contact number. This follows the lead set by Samaritans in the Republic of Ireland several years ago.

Hi Ian thanks for that, I didn't know the cost of calling the 0845 nor that they had a free number. I hope no one was put off by the cost of calling, unfortunately when times get hard people often run out of credit or lose their mobile contracts so a free number is invaluable. Thanks for posting.

Over the years there will have been many people who were unable to make the call due to a lack of phone credit, or who received a huge phone bill some weeks later.

Thankfully, that has now come to an end. The 116123 number is free to call from landlines and from mobiles.
