Seriously? Are you for real? This is not a victimless crime and fare-dodging puts up fares for the rest of us.

You would think less of someone who REPORTED a crime than the person who COMMITTED the crime?

    I'm appalled!

I quite agree! I don't understand how anyone can condone fare evasion. Not sure if I would report someone but I would be very tempted. I would definitely have a go at them about it.

I'd probably just quietly tell him that if I didn't see he had a monthly ticket by the end of the week i'd be providing details to the train company. You probably don't have to report him; you just need him to understand that you will if he doesn't sort this out himself. No group conversation, this is between you and him.
  • Yes report him/her but to their boss in the office.

Reporting to the train company is futile as you seem to have no proof, it's hearsay. If you think s/he is a repeat offender and sticks to a schedule then you can provide the times to the train company and they will deal with it as they see fit.

I would tell his/her boss that they have been gossiping around the office on the subject of dodging fares and they are disrupting the productivity of the office.

Most importantly though, you need to get brave and vocal. When you hear this sort of thing happening you've got to tell them directly that it is not something to be proud of and many of his/her colleagues think that they are a ?*%^^. Once you do it everyone else will follow suit.
There will always be obstacles in your way. It's not IF you remove them but HOW!

I'm not surprised you're annoyed by him - it's very unfair on everyone else that has paid and people like him cause fares to rise for everyone else. I think the suggestion of anonymously letting the train line know that you're aware of fare dodging on the line is a good one. Karma probably would have caught up with him anyway but there's no harm in helping it along!!
Just adding a little to this - Because it's not happening at work I don't know whether it is an HR issue - I'd be interested to hear arguments for or against on this. Obviously it is illegal and completely dishonest behaviour, but when the actual dishonesty taking place is not in the work environment, is it a work issue? That's why if I was in the situation I'd approach the train company first.
