But going by what you say in a busy shop they could never end up going home. If they did this and ended up staying over 8 hours after their shift I assume the next brightonman123 coming through the door would still demand they stay and deal with them!

It's so easy to say how someone else should do their job when you don't have to do it yourself isn't it! You've basically said you're treat anyone in a pubic service environment like a doormat and you couldn't care less whether they were on duty or not.

It will happen at least 100 times every day somewhere in this country, seriously that's true. That's what some people are like. I've seen it myself all too frequently, if you refuse to believe it you're every lucky with your working environment and have lived quite a sheltered life as to how some people can be.

One personal experience of mine was about 12 years ago. I was meeting a friend in town. He popped into the shop I was Assistant Manager in because he wanted a drink. As I was in there some (words can't even describe this sort of person) was making a fuss. What had happened the 18 year old girl serving him had obviously got confused she was holding his change in her hand pausing in handing it over, possibly thinking she'd pressed the wrong button or something wasn't right.

This guy (probably 60 +/- 5 years) had decided the only reason for what was going on was she was going to steal his change because she was black. I wasn't on duty obviously, the supervisor requested my help I listened the story and quite simply said the accusation was beyond belief and if wanted to take it further to put it in writing. He however was demanding it was dealt with then despite telling him I wasn't on duty, I was in jeans and a T-shirt!

So yes Hollydays it does happen, I'm so glad for you having you're nice job whatever it is where you don't have to deal with this countries headcases!

In fact we have someone even on this thread that has suggested staff not on duty should serve people. Brightonman123's post seems to suggest he think it's service for staff to serve even when their not on duty.

That post basically says 'I don't care, you're a doormat to me, if I'm about you can serve me'.

It's not ludicrous at all - it happens, often. So refuse to believe all you want, but you'd be wrong. Arrogant sod.

When i used to work at Tescos, i actually had someone demand i gave them a refund for something. I wasn't even in Tescos at the time, i had already finished work and went to a pub to meet some mates.

Theres also been numerous times when i was in store doing some shopping and had customers demand stuff from me. I wasn't even working that day and didn't have my uniform on, but they recognised that i worked for Tescos

Nope. Grow up? Most people in this thread have been spot on.

I quite enjoy the shouty ones .......it's a real challenge sometimes to turn them from roaring lions to complete pu$$ycats by the end of the call. I sometimes volunteer to take the "I only want a manager" calls if I'm a bit bored.
I however won't tolerate getting sworn at though - and work on the three strikes basis - If someone is abusive I will terminate their call and flag their account as an abusive customer accordingly. Don't assume that ringing back after letting rip will get you more help as the agent usually can see what happened on the last call. I had a customer last week who admitted he had let rip at the previous agent and hung up. He got my best school teacher voice saying he would not be doing that to me ;) He didn't and was happy I sorted the problem out.

Most people are great- it's a minority who are deliberately difficult -without cause.

You clearly are the right person for the job.

I would had I not worked in retail for so long and seen it happen to arguably 75% of all my colleagues on all levels - you can disbelieve all you want, but most people who have any experience in the field know it exists. (I admit that I probably attract the nutjobs because I probably have that "I like dealing with crazies" look, but lets be fair I'd much rather I dealt with normal, reasonable people all day!)

On the flip side of that, dunno if it's just me, but when I get a customer who's genuinely appreciative of your efforts to help them out it makes the day seem like a good one. Maybe a couple of times a week you get a customer who will say "thanks" and actually mean it and it brightens your day!

Let's go back to the example commented on.
If I was walking through my workplace in the example quoted above, I would be sure my uniform was completely covered up, hiding tie for example, completely.i would not have my sandwiches openly in my hand. I'd put them
In a bag so I don't look like a member of staff who's just going or even just been.. For his her lunch .
If your uniform was completely covered how would anyone spot you were an employee.
If you walk through your shop with an open hoody on, is it any wonder the customers spot you.
If they know you and spot you , you politely direct them to another member of staff. It's not difficult. I'm sure well have a list of obscure random things customers have done,.

Of course it's annoying if you are trying to get to your break- the customer is not trying to deliberately annoy you, they just want serving..

If you find it hard to be polite, no ones forcing you to work there.
