God there is some ridiculous stuff in this thread. They do not have handheld gadgets that can tell you are watching TV. Kayak10, was your TV on when he came? TVs dont give out any magical waves. Also would this gadget be able to analyze satalite or tell if there is a cable going into your house being used for live TV or hack into a secure wifi to tell if you are streaming live TV? Of course it cant. Nothing exists that can. Its pretty much certain that the detector vans are also BS since TVL admit that evidence from such things has never been used in court. Even if the detector vans are real is it possible to compact all that equipment into a portable device, of course its not.

I fully believe he had 'something' in his hand. These people carry portable computers to log visits etc but they are not magical detection devices.

I don't know how old you are but I rem about ten years ago a mobile phone was the size if a brick Now I belivie you can get one in a wrist watch Tecnoligy has moved on a pace

You're wrong about everything, you're even spreading misinformation about imaginary handheld tv detectors now.

Since there are only three regular posters to this large thread, surely the conversation (such as it is) would be better conducted via private message?:D

Like a tv you have a choice You don't have to read or respond
I WILL be posting again when I have PROOF of some of the points I've been making Hopefully in the next week or so
  • I haven't got time to read through all this thread but going on what I have, I don't believe that the telly licence people have hand held devices that can detect if you are watching live tv.

Nor do I believe in detector vans. People used to get caught because they let them in.

If you are not watching live tv then you could remove the right of access for the licence official coming onto your property if you have a path, drive, et al. Whether that would work on a terreced house on the pavement I don't know.

Yes - it works for all property types, preventing TVL from approaching the front door, standing on the doorstep or entering the property.

You mean you're not here for the entertainment?;)

I must admit the advice about not opening the door isn't that good, as how do you know who it is? My solution to all cold callers is a sign on my bell saying words to the effect of "if you don't know my name go away". This covers all cold callers but doesn't impact meter readers and the like. If they start off by saying "good evening madam", I just politely shut the door..

Not opening the door works better for some people/some types of home than others.

It seems like WOIRA (Withdrawal of Implied Right of Access) is now getting to the level where it begins to have critical mass (around 10,000 households). The level is also increasing rapidly.

On that basis, I think it begins to become a viable option, especially where not opening the door is tricky or not a commitment a household wants to make.

I have been doing a bit of research and it seems detection of TV signals is possible in limited circumstances (or was). According to some stuff i have found the BBC suggests its detector vans work in the following way. This method is also proved to work (there are posts on IET forums, one person has even acquired and old 1980s detector van and got it working).

A TV tuner has an item called a 'local oscillator' which converts the signal into a form that can be displayed by the TV. This like all RF items gives off mild interference. In the case of TVs this is amplified by your aerial (so your aerial works for both receiving and unintentionally transmitting). This interference is always so many mhz different from the channel being watched (so far makes perfect sense) and can be picked up outside your house. If you had the correct equipment you could not only tell if a TV was being watched but also have a better than fair guess as to exactly what channel was being watched.

Now here is the thing. All the above relies on the TV having a local oscillator and receiving a UHF/VHF signal. Modern TVs are digital and dont need a local oscillator, Also if you were using satellite or cable the above technique wouldnt have worked.

So basically at the moment TV detection doesnt exist (or is at least according to my reading including the Institution of Engineering and Technology site very unlikely). There are methods that have been experimented with by exploiting electromagnetic radiation from flat screens but its mainly theoretical and certainly wouldnt be available as a small handheld device.
