PS4 or Xbox One?

As I'm a bit of gaming nerd I have both consoles so I can give a pretty balanced view here.
Both are great machines, but as a pure gaming device the PS4 is superior. It has a simpler user interface, superior technical specifications and the controller is fantastic. I love it. It'll also serve as a netflix/iPlayer box if you need that too.
The Xbox one is a great all rounder (and it has Titanfall which is great fun) but it has some very weird problems that hold it back. The user interface is really odd. If you use Kinect it's ok but navigating with a pad is really counter intuitive. The TV stuff is also kind of a waste of time over here. If they'd have made a console that could also serve as a SKY HD/Virgin Media box it would be perfect. As a box it's also bloody massive, so if you're short of room bear that in mind.
However Live is an incredibly robust service and tends to have less problems than PSN. The controller is also brilliant. Also I find I tend to use the X1 more for playing movies as it has a proper remote, rather than the hideous app thing you have to use for the PS4.
Overall I prefer the PS4, but you also kind of have to vote where your friends are if you're into online gaming.0 -
How young is young? You could buy a PS3 AND a Xbox 360 for less than the price of one of the latest consoles! Buy him the Minecraft game and if he's anything like my kids, he won't play anything else anyway!
He's 10 this time! He already has a Nintendo Wii which is perfect for when his friends come round, but i think a PS4 or Xbox One is a step up and the Lego games look fantastic!0 -
it really depends on if the exclusive games that are coming out on the consoles in the future. my teenage son wanted to upgrade from his xbox 360 to an Xbox one but then highly regretted as his friends stayed with the 360 because of the price. and there really inst much difference apart from graphics and some other new functions. but my advice would stick with an xbox 360 or PS3 while his young as there is a larger amount of younger games to play on the older consoles compered to the newer generation.0

I agree, you'd get more value from a PS3 or 360. The PS4 and One will still be around for his twelfth birthday, but cheaper and with actual libraries of games (as opposed to a single shelf
).
I'd lean towards the PS3 for a ten-year-old. Online play is free, so they can dip in when they want without having to maintain a subscription (please do bear in mind that they should not play online unsupervised); the controller is a bit smaller than the 360 pad, so it's better for smaller hands; and they won't notice any minor graphics/performance differences. It's also a decent media player (better than PS4 or One).
You can pick up the 12GB version and get a 2.5" HDD for it separately (it has support for just about any 2.5" HDD, unlike the 360). Install the HDD on day one, as the 12GB space will vanish when a HDD is installed, and you'll lose your saves (and not all of them can be copied).Q: What kind of discussions aren't allowed?
A: It goes without saying that this site's about MoneySaving.
Q: Why are some Board Guides sometimes unpleasant?
A: We very much hope this isn't the case. But if it is, please make sure you report this, as you would any other forum user's posts, to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.0 -

In addition to this Do not link a Debit or Credit card to the console, if you do remove the details once you have made the purchase OR buy 1 of the Playstation Network Wallet cards to add credit to the account.0 -
Be aware that the PS4 is hammering the XBox One in worldwide sales and racing away with around a 2:1 advantage each week...
Weekly Hardware Chart 12th July 2014

PS4_______52,549____42,553____6,939____113,972
XOne______43,503____14,842____N/A______61,388
...might have a slight impact in the future if games companies decide to put more resources the PS4's way.0 -
It's possibly worth noting that whether the PS4 or One is lead platform will only have a tiny difference this generation. It's not a case of choosing to optimise for the PS3's ridiculous Cell with its tacked-on RSX versus a more traditional setup in the 360 (versus Broadway and Hollywood, if you're so inclined). Both the PS4 and One share underpowered 8-core CPUs and AMD GPUs, with the PS4 simply having a speed advantage with its faster memory and slightly higher clocks. From a programming standpoint, development is almost identical.Q: What kind of discussions aren't allowed?

After having my new PS4 break after just 3 weeks, I'll be selling it once it's been returned from the overworked Sony repair centre and going back to my trusted Xbox 360.0

I'd agree with lovinituk!
Since he's 10, a PS3 or Xbox 360 may be a better choice. There's an extensive catalogue of games on both systems that he wouldn't have played, and more age appropriate. Both systems will still see new releases for the next year or so too.
If you are set on the next-gen consoles, then (as said above) what his friends have, since Xbox owners can't play with PS owners and vice-versa. I'd only worry about exclusives if he's over 15... but there some aimed at younger people that only appear on PS and XB.
Little Big Planet is a PS exclusive: a platformer with customisable levels and characters. Good fun for young people.
Xbox have some great Kinect games as well. Dance Central / Kinect Sports... great for kids.
But on the whole most games will probably be on all platforms (LEGO games, Skylanders, Disney Infinity etc.)
OR... *Cue the uproar*
Get a Wii U or a handheld consoles like a 3DS or a Vita.
Hope this is helpful. I'm happy to offer more advice!0 -
