My son wants a new console for his birthday!
Which would you say offers best value for money?

just including ps4 and XBone...
performence wise the ps4 trumps the xbox by a clear mile.
entertainment wise (tv etc), kinect and for more general games the xbox one wins
price wise the ps4 does not come with the playstation camera at £349 and a version of the xbox without one is also £349
if you then include the xbox one kinect version against the ps4 and buying the camera its only around a £10 difference.
both also have subscription services for online play.
to be honest it all relies on personal preference and what he wants from it. There isnt much to seperate them now except loads of stats and opinions; you may as well buy him what he prefers.
if you have friends with the consoles take him around and get him some time on them or see if you can find shops that have demo stations for them. It's less a case of value and more a case of what he will enjoy most.0 -
I agree with Matj.
and also add that for me it comes down the exclusive games, I like playing uncharted and infamous which are on the playstation only.0 -
Find out which console his friends have. It doesn't matter which one is the better spec if he can't play against his friends (I learnt this the hard way).0

Personal opinion - Xbox One.
Reasons for me:- It has the Halo series on it - I don't care much for other FPS games, but Halo, I love it.
- MS has been pretty good in the customer service department over the years, ever since the Original Xbox - and even with my issues with the XBone lately, they do try.
- XBL is brilliant and the free game (whilst usually a cheaper indie game) keeps the missus busy for hours, and this is someone who is very much NOT a gamer. She loves Max: Curse of the Brotherhood.
- I love being able to sit down, and just say "Xbox on", and the Xbox, TV, Sky box and sound bar all turn on in one go without me having to reach for a remote.
- All my friends have an XBone, none of them have a PS4.
- I've never looked at a trailer for a game and gone "Wow! I really want to play that" for Playstation games (aside from No Man's Sky, which will come to the XBone at some point anyway).
- I love the ability to stream music from my PC (which may even be in another room) to my Xbox by just right clicking on the tracks/folder and selecting "Play to: Xbox One".

i got an xbox one. My reasons were based on the exclusive titles it has compared to the ps4 titles.
Primarily it is a games machine so all the extras are secondary. Kids want to play with their mates so just get him what his mates have already.0 -
I switched from an Xbox One to a PS4.
The specs, the exclusive games, the exclusivity is all HOGWASH. As has been pointed out before, there is only one question you need to ask.
What do his friends have, copy that you will be laughing.0 -
Firstly, forget specs, performance comparisons and "what's better on paper", it's misleading and pretty much irrelevant at this level.
The only important things are...
1) What do his friends have?
2) Which controller does he prefer?
Nothing else, barring price, should matter.0 -
I'd agree with what most other people are saying already; go for what his friends have. If his friends haven't got next generation consoles themselves yet, then what does he have already? If he already has a 360 or a PS3, then go with the next-gen version of that console. He'll probably be more happy with the exclusive game choices and more used to the controllers.
Failing that, just ask him if he has a preference. If you don't want him to know you're getting him one, maybe frame it as if you've heard a debate on TV or radio about which one's better and ask his opinion.0 -

I've never seen so much BS in one post.
For pure gaming then PS4, if you want a media centre X1.
As said above though, best to get the console his mates all play on.0 -

i agree with Gordon, what a load of BS haha.
no frame rate drops is a good thing, at least we agree on something. But the same can be said on BOTH consoles (XBO deals better with less demanding games, where as the ps4 actually lags behind a little bit for more family orientated games but outperforms the XBO for demanding games)
Exclusive DLC is mainly for mainstream generic games (COD etc), and the ps4 gets an equal amount for more 'gamer' orientated titles (assassins creed being a good example).
entertainment and controller are both personal opinion.
The online models for XBL v PSN are now almost identical. Both offer free games and offers each month to subscribers. Is microsofts still account based by any chance?... a subscription per account? PSN subscription is console wide; applies to all accounts if the main console account has a subscription (used to be a nightmare me and my partner both having to pay on the 360).
as above though, i still maintain there is nothing to seperate these consoles except personal opinion. Everyone else has mentioned friends which is a good point also.0
