I came across this thread whilst searching for something else - two years on and our local Morrisons still uses trolley locks. Wonder what will happen when the £1 coin changes. Will the supermarkets really be prepared to spend probably millions adapting all their trolleys?

They put them back on at certain stores where there are problems with stolen trolleys etc.

If the £1 changes you'll just see more of those tokens given out.

Perhaps, although none of the other stores locally appear to use them, Sainsburys regularly have to scour the bus station for their trolleys!

Do folk really make a decision on which supermarket to go to depending if the trolleys are chargeable or not?

I've got news for you, the £1 is refundable!

The lock mechanisms have to be changed periodically for wear and tear, given that they've had two years to accommodate the new shape they'll incorporate any changes needed in to their usual maintenance plan. I doubt it will cost any more than they would spend anyway.
