Only a minority of elderly people go into residential care so I wouldn't plan on its being inevitable.0 -
Sorry but I dont agree CCTV should be in patients rooms, people being cared for have a right to privacy whether its carer, relative or friend interaction. How would they or you feel visting a relative/friend and someone is watching, listening and taping your private conversation.0

My point too the person has a right to privacy surely?0 -
Beatings, mocking, slapping ,manhandling and god knows what else they are doing in privacy, no dignity in that treatment. Not all carers are cruel but it is amazing how many are.
Also managers would be taken to task for not been proactive and letting it happen in homes they manager. Vulnerable people feel pain and cruel beatings should not be happening and must stop. The only way that is going to happen is for CCTV in residents rooms.

You lose privacy anyway when you live in residential care. It's hard to avoid this when you have people helping you with washing dressing etc. I would rather have CCTV that would be viewed by senior staff than risk people being mistreated.0

No, but then you'd have more people being abused by relatives instead. Especially in situations where there isn't an extended family willing and able to help out.
Edit - a lot of poor practice is not down to individuals getting a kick out of it, it's about lack of training, lack of respect and staffing levels which mean you don't have the time or the energy to do things properly when you're being run ragged on 12 hour shifts and dealing with people who can be physically or verbally abusive. CCTV isn't going to solve that. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

I am not sure what you mean by the above, are you aware of relatives abusing vulnerable people?
Nursing Homes take people in the home on the bases that they are able to care for them, if they do not employ enough staff then it’s up to the manager to deal with that, it is not the fault of the vulnerable person. Cares should not take their frustration out on helpless residents. If carers are not able to cope then they should report this to manager and they should act accordingly. The home takes very large sums of money from residents to provide adequate care instead of abuse which is a criminal act.

Thanks for link however 2 wrongs do not make a right. The petitions is for abuse in care homes not in the person own home. People in the cares home are locked in these places and in some cases they do not have love ones that will be available to visit or help them, its shocking that they are paying for care and only getting abuse and this should not be allowed to go on behind closed doors.

I do not believe that BB in every area of a care home (you'd have to include toilets, baths, as well as bedrooms) is the answer. It would not only survey those needing help but also those residents who are able to cope themselves.
CCTV has its uses but not 24/7 for everyone.0
