this is certainly a positive step to provide funds for students and keep them in school. I would help the education process. i for one like it0

Makes me wonder what will happen now for the children
born 1996 onwards, as they cannot leave before 18. Wonder
if it's to get out of EMA. (whoever is in power)!0 -

Young people don't have to stay in school until they're 18; they have to be in education or training, which can include apprenticeships. I think that the funding for this may well cost more than EMA!0 -
I agree, the cost of funding every child in education, training
will certainly outstrip the cost of EMA considering the amount
of people actually receiving it.0 -
is there any scholarships available for international students who wish to pursue there higher education in Europe........0

As someone who recieves EMA I've found it's a really awkward system. I'm taking 4 A-levels and an AS at a further education college 1.5 hour away from my house with longer hours than anyone else thus I'm finding it difficult to get a part time job because of the lack of shifts I'm able to do, I intially didnt mind this as I could budget my EMA as income but there are some issues.
1. Its payments are extremely irregular.
2. The conditions : You musat always be in college with 2 abcenses per term I think it is allowe following paperworkand if you are late 3 times in a week you will not be paid.
3.A lot of the above depends on your institution and their administration. At my college this is very poor. There are different standards amongst teachers as to what constitutes as 'late' in terms of EMA and they change this depending on their mood i.e last week apparently road works is no longer an excuse...no EMA. Bus terminated during the heavy snow had to walk the last half an houriun calf high snow...no EMA. Poor communication between teachers: I was off for 3 vital theatre trips which when I enquired why I had not recieved EMA I was told it wasn't reported and it was tooo late to change the system once again no EMA.
My college has also introduced a security check at the door which can make you late if one person holds up the flow.
Also note that if you are late in order not to loose your money it can be tempting not to go in.
Overall it is a very complicated and petty system and I'm starting to think I would have been better off getting a job. Rant over0 -
i think its terrible thats everythings always means tested. just because my parents work i cant get ema. its pathetic. just because they earn more doesnt mean they can afford to give me £30 a week0
