I struggle to send texts in broad daylight when I am sitting on the sofa and have nothing else to do but concentrate on hitting the right buttons....

I think us brits are a bit more sensible and dont text and drive but it is apparantly quite common in places like LA. Where people frequently do long motorway drives and drive automatic which is less engaging and makes you bored on the steering wheel.

Must be said I find just reading a text message is frustrating yet along writing one. Writing a text is the most time consuming and fiddly task I am forced to do on a phone. It does my head in!

    Drive and text? Never.

All to often I see someone with a phone in hand behind the wheel, I hate it, its something that I get annoyed with when in driving seeing someone behind me fiddling about on a phone, or its stuck to their ear and their yapping away and driving on my bumper.

Even saw a mature lady pick her grand kid up put him in the back (unharnessed) get in the front, get on the phone then drive when she was already stationary to make the call properly, luckily there was copper at the end (police station round the courner) of the road watching her on her phone as she drove down to the junction.

In my opinion it should be a straight ban for mobile phone use in the UK whilst behind the wheel. don't care if your a professional driver, CEO of a big company, or average joe, you get caught your car is towed, your license suspended immediately, min of 12 month ban maximum indefinitely for repeat offending, you don't get to plead for your license in court and receive 40points and £200 fine, its a ban that's it its absolute and no wiggle room to negotiate hardship to retain license.

I absolutely HATE drivers who use a mobile whilst driving. I have never touched a phone while I have driven in the 12 years ive held a license even before they started giving out points for it. nothing is more important than my full concentration on the road, ring you back when I get chance to stop end of.

I think you need to be a bit more observant.
What gets me are the number of people in high end cars which have bluetooth still driving holding phone to their ear.

Or those people who put their phone onto loudspeaker but hold it close to their mouth while they're driving!

Maybe a scheme in similar fashion to uninsured cars and taking them off the road?

Confiscate the phone and only return it when the car is returned with a hands free kit installed.

I dont think my options for repeat offenders are for those that maybe a bit squeamish :)

It's a tricky one. I hate seeing people drive while using their mobiles, but as someone who has to have access to his phone at all times, it's a weird time we live in. After a few months of answering my phone using the loudspeaker which is probably more dangerous than holding it to your ear, I fitted a specialist head unit which has Bluetooth as one of it's main features. This is ideal but it's not a perfect solution by any means. For one, if you're battery conscious like me, you may turn your Bluetooth off. Then, you get back in the car and forget to turn it on.

It's also a bit weird about calls which cut out. I don't think it's the head unit though as it was fine on older versions of Android. It's ever since Jelly Bean.
