Possible Bank Cashier Error.

Hi,

A week and a couple of days ago I asked the bank cashier at Santander for £240 and she quickly counted it out and I asked her to put £230 in an envelope and give me £10. I've just this minute checked the envelope, opened it and counted it and there is £25 missing. It is for this month's rent.

I think that either she miscounted or she didn't hear what I asked for. I have not yet checked my account and cannot do that online, but I will do on Monday. If it happens that she has miscounted, how would that be proved?

Thanks.

I'm going to state the obvious here...

...could someone in your household have taken the £25 from the envelope?

No. My room is always locked when I'm not in and the envelope that the money was in has not been tampered (the cashier put the money in the envelope) with.
  • Do you not have telephone banking. If there was an error at the bank, surely it would look better if it was looked into sooner or they will come off with 'mistakes cannot be rectified later' stance.

I know nothing of banking so I'm lost on that one. I don't have telephone banking. I live up the road from the bank so it is convenient for me to just "pop in".
  • Hi,

I would think if you are getting £240/230, you would get it in £10's, so where does the £5 come in?

If you can't get access to online banking or telephone banking, could you not stick your debit card into an ATM to get a mini statement?

  • Go to the bank ask for a manager tell them the time and date and cashier they will look into it to see if that cashier did not balance on that day

If you live that close to a bank and its easy just to pop in, why did you take the money out so much in advance.

They don't normally put money in envelopes for you. And then its usually all of it. And, she would have put tenners in....

The whole business sounds a bit suss to me to be honest.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

That's why I think she made an error, or I simply asked for the wrong amount.

They do if you ask them to. If I asked for £230 it would alll be in tenners. But it wasn't. So either she miscounted or she didn't hear the amount I asked for. She counted very quickly, as they do, but I do not remember her re-counting it. Also, they don't always give receipts. They just ask "Is there anything else I can help you with?"
