Does the letter say what the claim is for?Police Warning Notice Vehicle Excise Duty
RegMark: **** ***
Date of offence: 24/04/2014
This Vehicle has been seen on a public road without a valid tax disc. A report has been sent to the local office of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) for action under the provision of the Vehicle Excise & Registration Act 1994.
If you do not have a license for this vehicle you should obtain one immediately to cover the whole period it has bee kept/used on the public road, Exempt(nil) vehicles must display a current valid tax disc at all times.
The maximum fine for using or keeping a vehicle on the public road without a valid tax disc is £1000 or 5 times the annual rate of duty payable for the vehicle, which ever is greater. In addition to the fine, convicted offenders will have to pay back-duty penalties.
Advise on relicensing a vehicle is contained in form V100, available at post offices.
Date 24/04/2014
Officer details: ****
This is everything which is quoted on the notice.
i cant quote from the letter i recieved as i returned it with my evidence but basically it quoted what the notice quoted in the first paragraph above.
Hope this helps?
regards.

It is not a Fixed Penalty Notice, just a form advising you that the vehicle was seen without a licence and the details will be passed to the DVLA.
Was the vehicle licensed on 24th April? If it was, that would be why the DVLA said that they would not take any further action in respect of that notification.
Could the letter have referred to a different occasion?0 -

Was the vehicle licensed on 24th April?
The confirmation quotes:
Applicaion Made on: 22/04/2014 - 14:48:20PM
so surely the tax would be valid no later than the 23rd?
regards.

But they have taken further action! this is why im asking for advise on what to do as if i pay to stop court proceedings thats basically be pleading guilty to the offence!
nope the letter quoted the same date as the notice.

Yes the date that is stamped on the actual tax license (circle bit you legally have to have on show in your vehicle) is 22/04/2014

Thankyou Rover for your assistance with regards to this, this pretty much confirms what i thought anyway.
Have you any experience with regards with disputes with the DVLA? are they quick to respond or not?
i did re-post my letter on the same day as it arrived with me so should get to them well before the due date of the fine.
regards.

It's not a fine, I expect it was an out of court settlement offer for the offence of not having a licence - which you have.
Once they realise that your car was licensed they should drop the matter, if they don't, (it is the DVLA after all!!) all you need to do is produce the licence.0 -

thats correct there was an out of court settlement (£171) but surely if i dont pay then i will get a court summons??
would the license need to be produced in court or will DVLA request a copy of it?
anyway i will keep my fingers crossed that DVLA have made an error and wll update this thread once it has been resolved so others can reference from it
Again i would to thank everyone who has responded to this thread, it has been a big headache but hopefully one that has now reasured me of my rights thanks to this community
