Bamboo will take over your garden if you are not careful.0 -
Do you really want to do the whole 30 feet? And indeed 6 feet - how tall are you and your neighbours? I would go for plants I liked somewhat tactically planted around where you are most likely to be.But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.

I can't really visualise what you've got already. Any chance of a photo?
We've got a 6ft fence either side and have no problems with light - but it really depends on the width of your garden.0 -
I agree with your OH - 6ft fencing all around my garden would feel like I was imprisoned. We've got 6ft on 2 sides (one long side and the bottom of our garden) and then on the other side its 5ft - I much prefer the 5ft height. You still have your privacy but you can still see the tops of your neighbours heads as they pop in and out etc.
Hedging doesn't have to be wide - or you could go for shrubs and bushes as hedging instead. Some varieties of shrubs/bushes grow in excess of 6ft with time.
I definitely wouldn't want an outside curtain, bamboo fixed to spike posts might work though? If its a permanent feature you want, a fence would probably be the best idea.0 -
Why not have a couple of 6ft panels along part of your garden with climbers up them and 3 ft for the rest? Best of both worlds!(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -
