Neighbours side fence- reaching compromise with OH?

Neighbours side of fence is a 3 foot brick fence , double width their side, brick, running the length of our gardens, approx 30 foot, our side is wood posts/ feather board 6 foot fence, the neighbours across the way 6 foot fence, feather board.

So I want a fence their side, for privacy, in front of their wall, not against it, causing no damage or attachment to their brick wall,, OH doesn't , he says it works better now on the eye line, makes the gardens look bigger, that we seemingly have more space.

I say on a beautiful day like today I want to sit in my garden, on a lounger, book in hand enjoying the privacy and not have to watch neighbours have theirs/ have their grand kids talk to us over the fence, etc, we can see directly into their living room through their double footed patio doors.

OH says fence up, will feel like a prison, all enclosed, will never get any sunshine, all the plants will die from lack of sunlight ( jeez:o)

So OH comes up with compromises? Run a gazebo material type curtain along the length of the brick fence making it to the height of 6 foot , can be put up / taken down ??

Wilkinsons bamboo use it for days like today when everyone is in the garden and we all want to have our own BBQ with are own friends/ family?

Very large pot plants/ trees? Massive cost I would say to run along the footage of the wall?

What do you think?

Our new build fence had about 3 inch gaps between the pieces of wood so anyone and their mum walking down the road could stare into our garden and/or living room.

We got bamboo screening from B&Q to put around the whole of the fencing, and to add some height at the top to stop a certain nosy neighbour staring over the top. It's brilliant and hasn't reduced any light for us, but has given us tonnes more privacy.

Would you mind me asking was it expensive? How is it tied down for wind/ rain etc days? Does it move? Will look on the B &Q website

I have always thought low fences were really odd, I've always lived in the south and 6ft fences have always been the norm, who wants to see their neighbours laundry drying?! My OH is from the Midlands, and his Mum's house has low walls like your neighbours, they all get on so it's fine, OH tells me this is the Northern way, lol :) He thinks it's really antisocial down here, but I like my privacy!

Personally, I can't see the problem with putting up 6ft fences. The plants won't die from lack of sun, the sun does this magical thing where it moves across the sky ;-) But if he really won't give in, the bamboo idea sounds nice, create a removal fence, I think the gazebo material wouldn't look very nice, whereas the bamboo is more garden-y and could look quite attractive, shouldn't be too expensive either!

Thanks shiney85 just looked at the bamboo, £14 each , just unsure if it will stay up?

Just to add neighbours are fine, no issues other than I don't want to see them every time I'm trying to eat al fresco ha ha

    I've been Money Tipped!
    I'd hate low fences too.

But a compromise might be looking at planting that gives you privacy from late spring to autumn , but more light from late autumn and through winter?

It wasn't really cheap, but it was less aggro and looked better than trying to 'fix' the gaps. It was £14-15 for about 3 metres long I think, although they come in varying sizes. The bamboo ones are the cheapest ones, you can get all sorts.

OH bought some sort of special pins the he hammered into the fence to secure it. Ours only sticks about half a foot above the fence so never had an issue with wind etc. I think if you're going vastly higher than your current wall/fence you could always whack some sturdy trellis up I suppose, and then perhaps put screening onto it.

Edit: if you're just wanting it up for really temporary periods, like bbqs or sitting outside, I wonder if you could get 6 foot high trellis and attach screening onto it and lean it against the wall??

Thanks:D we would be putting it in front of the brick wall so it would be floor to 6 foot directly in front of their wall, around 25/30 foot length wise, so it would be a lot of bamboo:D

Our garden is tiered twice, so by the time the end arrive it would be 4 foot of bamboo high as the tier is 2 foot high ( neighbours have all flat green grass garden, we have grass but tiered)

    What would you suggest ?

OH said a green hedge but considering he is very concerned about darkness/ loosing garden space he then changed his mind as it would have to be 6 foot grass base and maybe more like 4 foot at the very end of the tiered garden to get the height equivalent of a 6 foot fence for privacy and then he said no hedge arrives to that height:D
