For anyone reading this and thinking of upgrading or buying new, I'd strongly recommend buying the monitor separately. You'll have more control over your purchase and be able to choose the most appropriate model. Any "savings" from a PC/monitor bundle tend to be offset by SMS (s***** monitor syndrome).
I agree completely, I wasn't advocating buying in a bundle, just answering a pointless jibe..;)

That makes exactly the same point that you are arguing against...Everything then goes down hill.....
You are coming across as the forum queen who is just arguing for the sake of it.

Anyway, the forum is not intended to massage your ego, so we'll agree to disagree.

To those of you who sent PM's with your support, thank you.

It is actually you who appears to be arguing for the sake of it. To the point of at least half of what you are writing not making any sense at all. You appear to have little to no technical knowledge, yet here you are arguing, uselessly, on a Tech forum.

It appears that you are unable to service your PC, so in turn you choose to replace your PC every three years.
That doesn't mean that is the best solution.

I used to think like that and, like you, had tried a couple of Linux distros in the past but I recently had to replace my PC (an old XP box) and decided that this time I was going to bite the bullet and get away from Windows for good. After a bit of research I tried Zorin OS and I've got to say it's been great. Even my FIL (Chief Luddite) gets on with it. The latest release has long term support, it's free, it looks just like Windows 7 so it's not such a culture shock to new users, it works and it's easy to set up and use.

    Well worth a look :)

I'm a long time linux sceptic, but recently I found myself with a couple of old laptops on my hands that had been replaced and were gathering dust. One - a Samsung netbook with an unusual nano chipset - was running XP; the other - a Toshiba laptop - was running Vista. Using either was like watching paint dry. No way was I interested in paying a small fortune for Windows 8 for 2 obsolete machines so I decided to give linux another try.

The only distro I could find that would run on the netbook (because of its unsupported chipset) was an out-of-support version of Mint. It is now doing sterling service as a 24/7 file server. The Toshiba is running Zorin OS and I must echo ND's comment. It's been transformed from a dog to a totally usable 'light duty' machine. It boots quickly, shuts down instantly and everything works exactly as it should; sole exception: so far I have not managed to get the duplex option on my networked Brother printer to work (not a deal breaker...). Its speed and usability are a revelation after Vista. To date, I have not resorted ONCE to a console or command line.

Personally, with a few basic exceptions like a memory upgrade or a larger hard disk, I wouldn't upgrade hardware in an old PC. If the OP really has already bought a replacement and now has an unused clunker on the shelf, it is worth trying Zorin. There's nothing to lose and it costs zilch.

Old enough to uphold a cogent debate. How about you?

This is a Technical forum. All you have advocated so far is just spending money on a new PC.
I can't see how that fits in with the ethos of the website. Nor can I see how it fits in with the purpose of this particular board.

You've offered no technical advice nor have you shown anyone how to save money.
You have simply offered the opinion of someone who knows nothing about PCs and therefore buys a new one instead of simply updating the old.
Correct me if I am wrong.

Let's see how is 'old enough' to maintain a cogent argument, in keeping with the subject matter of the thread.

Hehe, you're the second person I've seen online who thinks that the only Windows 8 interface is Metro. :D It has a desktop interface as well, that looks like... well, Windows. (Although why we're still discussing W8 in 2014 is beyond me - get Windows 8.1! Much better. Free upgrade from 8, too)
well, I'm a 7 and a Linux man, so I don't know much about windows 8, what I do know and do question is the touch screen mobile crap that it seems riddled with - the technology is cool, but it's a gimmick. it's like gluing a television to a washing machine, calling it a washervision, I can watch telly all day while I wash my clothes..... perfectly possible, perfectly useful?

you get the picture. Touch screen tech is good for mobiles, tablets and that ilk. what I question is its use, and moreover productivity in desktop/laptop markets because although I use two screens at work and think that's great productivity I have not been able to make that mental leap and visualise people eating bananas and lunch , pawing touch screens with grubby hands, and being productive... I think a mouse is the adequate and ideal solution.

Linux actually one of the better arguments to get a newer machine - better than two people trying to kill each other on a forum thread, cause then you can get a load of ram and run whatever distro you like in a VM - intel i5's and 7's fab at virtualisation.

You seem to be arguing with yourself as no one has contradicted your theories.
I suggest you go back and read the thread again. You seem to be so wrapped up in your own bile and self righteousness that you have lost the plot.
Once again your post is full of supposition and little fact, so, consider yourself corrected..
