Agreed, 8Gb is more than enough. I do a lot of video rendering too however and that does require a lot of resources.

Parva, you said on the last page that you got 16GB to play online games that use more than 8GB! :rotfl: OK, so just a few days and a dozen posts after first being asked, we've finally got to the answer. :D Say, what CPU do you have? And graphics card?

Hehe, bargain! My wife's been running an E6600 for the past couple of years for her design work. It's my old E6600 that I got in about 2006, and I suspect it will only be replaced when it dies. (Actually I think the motherboard is feeling its age a bit at the moment, but it would only be £185 to get an i3-4150, 8GB RAM, H97 mobo and new case (I know, no case really needed, but I HATE her old case, it is literally the worst thing about my life) - however, I must resist the urge to upgrade her prematurely, as that's not good MSE behaviour! :D)

You're damned good at UK pricing for someone that's in Perth, Australia....

I converted into £. I'm afraid that I don't know how much those components actually cost in the UK (although I did know your GTX 770 prices recently! I helped a UK friend buy one).

Is the state of the UK education system really so bad that dividing by two is "damned good"? :o

All this willy waving has frightened off the OP who appears to have bought a new one anyway.

Not the case here, as the OP had purchased the PC before the debate began.

The point here being that the specification of the OP's
    PACKARD BELL
Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 4300 @ 1.80GHz
    Memory: 1.5 GiB

is perfectly usable and easily upgradeable at a low cost.

    In contrast to Parva's statement:
You are seriously wasting your time and money if you try to update such an old PC.

Nonsense of course. My PC is of a similar age and can run both Windows 7 and and all of the incarnations of 8 with ease.

Hopefully the OP can make use of the PC or pass it on to someone who can.
