    Yes I agree.

Have heard a few people lately say they don't like any of X or Y types of music in conversation.

Just found it a bit odd.

    Exactly.

My music playlist tonight has had Public Enemy, London Grammar, Dread Zeppelin, Sia, Lyle Lovett, Tove Lo, Cracker, Nina Simone, Sugar and many more on it.

I couldn't really imagine being constrained to one genre of music....

People are tribal and like to define themselves as being X or not being Y.

I was listening to Public Enemy this week. 911 is a Joke. I was inspired by the terrible news story from WA about a baby that was beaten to death. The mother was arrested rather than the police making any attempt to save the baby's life because it was an aboriginal family.

Actually I was thinking about this thread the other day, after we were talking about Aussie bands a while ago. A relative of mine promotes little known bands for a living and sent me this, really liked it! Think they could do well.

Listened to that tonight, along with Pollywanacraka and He Got Game.

Just very good at what they do.

Fear of a Black Planet is one of the great political musical pieces of our age (yours and mine not today!). It's utterly uncompromising.

    Indeed.

The young of today would find it hard to understand just how revolutionary that album was. On so many levels.

Also pretty amazing that new tracks like Harder Than You Think are just as good, just as revolutionary, and just as relevant two decades on...

    So music.....

Never understood why some people can't appreciate good music.

Not in the sense of being what a person thinks they like or are familiar with, but purely on the basis of an artist being exceptionally good at what they do.

    Or is that.... odd.

    What do the NP think?

There was a bit of a discussion of that here a while back. I tend not to like genres that start with r like rap, r'n'b, reggae and rock. On the other hand I really like Dread Zeppellin. Every genre's got some really class acts. ;)

Some of the best concerts I've been to are ones outside my comfort zone when I've been taken by friends who've recommended them. Joan Armatrading, Eric Clapton, Dr Hook, Simply Red, have all been magnificent acts.

A bunch of mates I used to share a lift with to primary school formed a band later in life. Done good stuff. Enjoy!

    .

A close relative by marriage was a music critic for a certain genre of music in a well known publication for a while. (People , fans, take it very seriously, there were quite nasty death threats and everything) .

He takes him self very seriously too, and opened his assessment of me with 'what kind of music do you like'. And my 'good music' answer was not acceptable , because it gave him no insight in to my soul. I pointed out it was a shame, because I felt I was getting to know him quite well:whistle:

I think I've gone native, I finally bought a proper hat:

I have problems since the radiotherapy when the sun hits the right side of my face and especially my ear. The hat is made from 14 rabbit pelts, a strip of 'roo leather, a little croc leather and some silk inside the hat. It's great.

    ..

I do dislike much jazz; I find its freeform style v stressful. However, I can appreciate a talented solo as much as the next person.

Re music. I'm not keen on thrash metal or very heavy rock, reggae or country. They aren't my bag. But that doesn't mean I can't like songs from that genre, I just don't like many of them. For example I love No Woman No Cry, it's one of my favourite songs of any genre. Some country songs have brilliant inspired lyrics but as a style it doesn't tug at my soul. Conversely I like good rap and its one of my preferred styles but don't like misogynistic lyrics.

Musicians are like artists. Picasso had off days and his paintings are not all equally good. I don't particularly like Francis Bacon, too much of a tortured soul, but that doesn't mean you can't appreciate his craft, iykwim.
