Been in complete denial about this portfolio. Going to be a late one, and then I'm going to hit the library early tomorrow.
Still, in 24 hours it will be done and I'll be mildly squiffy.
Deadline is 4 tomorrow. But I need to print it and hand it in, so 3.30 really is when it needs to be done by.
Good luck with that- don't bother replying -just get it sorted. :jThere is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -

First thought of the day is going out to Spirit .... wishes for a hasty return to normality going your way.
Hope you're at home now and lying amidst plumped up cushions with family clucking round like hens pandering to your every whim and command.0 -
I suspect that actually most people start off by doing the job with somebody who knows how - dad, friend, etc. Then they pick up the basics. After that, if they discover that they have some aptitude and inclination in that direction, they try picking up further skills on their own. Only after they've done quite a lot either with assistance or in a situation where it doesn't really matter how good the job is, can they go on and start charging people for their skills.
PN is still at the stage where she posts in triumph when she's assembled flat pack furniture without left over pieces and without the end product being wonky. She can tell that her curtain pole fixings aren't up to the job, but she probably doesn't know that that's because it's a newbuild house with flimsy stud walls, or what kind of special fixings would be necessary to overcome the difficulty. I think that's quite a long way from being able to show up to somebody else's house to get paid for fixing whatever they've decided is too hard for them to do themselves.PasturesNew wrote: »First thought of the day is going out to Spirit .... wishes for a hasty return to normality going your way.

Yes, indeed. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -
I don't think even new builds have external stud walls (the walls with windows in them)
Indeed. I suppose stud wall wasn't quite the phrase for what I meant. My previous house (built c2002) had external walls that wouldn't hold up a curtain pole if anybody yanked on the curtain - the fixings just pulled out of the plasterboard. Yes, of course there was something stronger on the outer side of the wall, but the bit facing in towards the room was as flimsy as the internal walls.
Since I had, at the time, two small children and a dog, none of whom could be trusted not to tread on the curtains by the french windows, it was quite a problem and the curtain pole got pulled down more than once. In the end the letting agent sent a bloke with some special fixings that went all the way through all the insulation and stuff and actually drilled into the external blockwork. Then the curtain pole stayed up even if the curtains were trodden on. This is why I have reservations about lir's preference for curtains that are longer than floor length and puddle on the floor.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -
It's a bit crazy to expect curtain brackets to be supported by plaster board. Possibly with special plaster board fixings, but really you need to drill into the masonry. Unfortunately, just where you want to put the curtain fixings is also, quite often, just where the lintel is.
LIR can get away with puddled curtains because her curtain brackets have been properly installed, I expect. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

Yes - although I am super careful, I'll be entering through the door with those curtains. Now, in daylight, when you're just going in and out and the curtains are open, not a problem .... but when you've pulled the curtains quite close and are returning in the wind/rain, with armfuls of shopping that needs to be brought in from the car .... it's enough of a juggling act without then having to make double sure you're not stepping on the curtain before the wind blows the door shut behind you, trapping your leg/foot and banging you on the 4rse ... and without dropping the bag with the eggs on the floor as you've attempted to bring all the shopping in in one go.
Right now the left curtain's 3" off the ground, the right one's just touching (don't ask.....) so puddles a little. I draw the curtains mostly closed in the evening - but already find it a pain that I have to draw that curtain back fully to pop inside and outside in case I tread on it on the way in.0 -

I only have one set of puddled curtains ATM. DH put up the curtain poles .
I was familiar up with puddled curtains in some houses as a kid but not in kitchens or my bedroom. I guess the dogs and I just were taught not to jump on theM? Dunno. I think I'd feel differently if I had kids, I don't .
Oh, I DO have puddling summer curtains in the cheese room, and the dogs do occasionally lie on the bottom of them. I have cleaned them once since they went up, that's true. But then, I put their beds right by the curtains!0 -
