I'm afraid, Sue, that you must plan to let someone down or put them off. A broken Sue is not a useful or helpful one, therefore finding some downtime is essential to make you more productive.

The net benefit of saying no and pacing yourself willbe greater than trying to do everything.

As much as I would love to say no, unfortunately it is not an option. I have a deadline of 5 days and missing it could put my housing at risk and none of the other things are movable/missable either!

I like your toaster. We use the grill. :D

I secretly kind of want , but would never really want, the kind of toaster they had at school, a big circular thing with a conveyor belt. All the toast went round at the same rate, but some was over done, some underdone and some just right. I suspect this was because little bits had Burnt out and not been fixed or whatever, but the toaster cranked up higher. Its surprising how many girls get the taste for carbonated toast and go for that over the other stuff. I never did.

I worked out those toasters when we had one in the worka canteen.

People turn up or down the temperature & speed depending on the last slice to come through. Trouble is, changes in the temperature dial take time to come through to the actual toast so people are alwaya trying to make toast based on out of date information.

That or your school had a dodgy toaster.

Got to do a couple of hours work on my dissertation tonight :(

I work better at night so it's not all bad. Got to go in to meet my tutor tomorrow and I'm kind of dreading it. I've sent him a 'draft' of my work, with one section. So I said something to the effect of 'Here's a section of the analysis I'm happy with... Is it on the right lines' It's the only section I've done but I'm not going to explicitly say so :D

Last time I saw him he was quite understanding about things. I think he can tell I've really been struggling the last few months, and I'm not being too hard on myself for once. I'm in a much better position now than I was expecting to be, and I'm doing better than I did at undergrad; the fact I'm worrying about it shows I'm doing better!

Intro is done, lit review done, methodology done, made a good start on the analysis. Got about 9000 more words to write. It isn't so bad. I want it done by Wednesday next week, which if I just get on with things and get my head down should be pretty easy. I need to get it bound, and I've got other things to do so it does need to be done by then really.

Been texting the slavic girl a bit on and off for the past few weeks. It was nice that we still seemed ok and friendly. Then she rang the night before last saying she thought I sounded down and she wanted to cheer me up. So we ended up chatting for well over an hour. On the face of it it's really nice, and I'm always complaining about how I've struggled to make friends this year, but in a way it just makes me feel worse about things.

Anyway. I'm just procrastinating. The plan is to do an hour or so, watch that programme about meat (while eating a ham sandwich), then do another hour or so.

There'll definitely be weather in all the UK ones, although I think France is immune from weather at this time of year.

Challenge for the NP. There was a conversation here recently about Not On The High Street.

I saw a lampshade I'd like for the living room:
    http://www.notonthehighstreet.com/lornasyson/product/robin-lampshade-small

The price (£70  ) is my only concern. I've had a mini web search but can't find it cheaper. Can anyone else?

Cheep and cheerful wallpaper? (Not hers at £110 a roll but I doubt you will find a small designer's stuff for less although she'll probably get more of your money if you buy direct from her)

You can make your own lampshades with wallpaper as well. Two birds, one stone :)

I didn't suggest that as I didn't see LJ as being the shade-making type :)

He seems to prefer more manly pursuits and I doubt it's in his mid-life-crisis bucket list somehow :)

I still like Morris' stuff, but it doesn't really suit our Deco style (built in 50s, though designed in 30s) house. Would have been perfect for our old home, which I think was built 1905 or thereabouts.

My mother loves William Morris stuff, she's chosen wallpaper and / or curtains from his designs in all the houses she's lived in.

I once made a pair of eyelet curtains for DDs room in very heavy fabric that she chose.

The method looked simple the reality was bit trickier. It was alabour of love.

After about 10 months she went off them and bought a pair of ready mades from Next!

Spirit, you are so much nicer than me.

  • PS - in that photo above, OH is wearing a work shirt with cufflinks, and jeans. That's not because he chooses to wear a naff combo of cufflinks and jeans, exactly, more that he got home from work and took his suit off, but couldn't be bothered to change further....

What dissertation is this? What degree, subject?

As well as Nik's NP PhD, we can have Masomnia's NP dissertation.

Before my holiday, I decided to go on the look out for new shades for my upstairs and downstairs hallway lights to match the new decor, unfortunately, for what I wanted, my pocket wouldn't stretch to.

Luckily, the first Sunday of our holiday we went to a boot sale and amazingly, I found exactly what I wanted (3 of them too) for just £3 for the lot! The cheapest price I had found brand new was £45 each, needless to say, I bartered and got the 3 of them for £2.

I'm doing an MSc Human Resource Management (not a real science I know). Dissertation is on linking pay and performance in the public sector. It's actually quite interesting :p

Got to do a portfolio for the CIPD (chartered institute of personnel and development) as well, which I'm about 20% of the way through, but that's a lot more straightforward.

Deadline for dissertation is the 1st, the CIPD thing is the 5th, but I want to get them done sooner. Sill need to find a job
