The car I really, really want is an Audi A1. I love Audis, have a really old one (that you met) and it is still going. Have had it from new and don't see any point in replacing it while it still starts every time and motoring is largely trouble-free. It's an A4 though and way bigger than I need given that there are only two of us. In short I want something with:

    5 doors
    Air-con
A more economical engine than I have
A cabin that's not too cramped
Space for cases when we go away (there's only two of us, so small boot plus back seats is fine)
Petrol engine (I don't do diesel)
    Reliable and well rated

Also it can't be ugly. I think that the A1 has a bigger engine than the Yaris or Auris and therefore better for longer runs (1.2l vs 1.0). The one make I won't buy is Vauxhall. I have had two - the second thinking lightning couldn't strike twice - and they were both nothing but trouble.

My Nissan Juke passes all those, though it is a bit of a marmite car.

Buffets, carveries, all you can eat - what's not to like?

I was so pleased when the breakfast we had the other week was "go back as many times as you want" as so many carveries are a "one shot only" approach.

A breakfast is a waste of an "all you can eat" for me. I feel awful all morning if I have a big breakfast.
I lowered the average recently when one of me divided my weight into two (unequal) portions.

Kermie must be doing great things for the average NP weight, if we're allowed to include him. :)
Black tie. Dh's Gaudy. I'm guessing sober is the order of the day, and smart. Not the hand painted silk thing in bright colours I've seen. Thing is, I'm more likely to wear bright silk thing again. But I think it looks a bit informal. Maybe even a bit bed jacket- ish.

Interesting. I didn't know partners went to gaudies. Ours is just for the former students themselves.

The question of what to wear to the inquest is now getting really pressing. I would have some options if it were winter, but am not sure if any of them will really do in August. Even though my solicitor's not going with me, I might phone her tomorrow for sartorial advice.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Black trousers, a coloured but not too patterned top. Remember that everyone won't be looking at you. So feel comfortable as yourself. I would think the image is serious but not widow's weeds.

I have a BMW series 1. It is all of the things you are looking for. It is a bit too sporty for me, but my OH and DD really like driving it.

Mine is automatic but has a number of driving style options..nit that I trouble them.

I had a 1 series as a hire car for a couple of weeks. Really impressed.

Much better than I expected it to be.

Yes, DH can take guest. But I didn't go to lAst one. Or rather we both went, got a room, and I was too unwell and had to stay in room, in bed, the whole time as couldn't move.

Cashmere goats must be fluffy, how else would they make cashmere jumpers so cuddly?
I didn't know cashmere comes from goats. I've heard of cashmere - and could tell you it was "some kind of posh wool", so I'd have guessed it came from a posh sheep :)

    Downstairs loo is finished :)

    Looks lovely. Well done.
Beenie just started on Channel 4..... double your house, half the money.
    Dream house £410k
    Current house value £250k
    Their budget: £70k

    3 bed 1960s semi

They want a big extension on the ground floor and master/en-suite upstairs. Needs to be insulated, Beenie recommended cladding the outside to do that.

Oooh. Didn't know there was a new series on. Thanks PN. :)

That was my idea, because the old design fell down on that point. I also wanted one that took the whole width so there was no awful corners for dirt to gather.

    Excellent plan. :)

I don't have a will. I'm not planning on leaving anything to the cats home, so I'd be happy for it all to pass to my parents (should I go first) or my brother.
That works until your parents become elderly/go into a home. After all, they'll do the right thing with it - and probably give most to your brother anyway ..... Once they're elderly/in a home, then you need to have one to specifically leave it to your brother else it'll go in home fees and he'll curse your name forever .....

I've got to write one for that reason ....

Thanks for flagging up PN's post - I'd missed that! I had definitely been wondering though :)

:j Excellent news PN. The chips/ pie/ pint is on you then
Yes - perchance to snag you a salty seadog :)
Or a yuppie .... your choice on the night.

If that's what you brought here in the week .... all I could tell was: it's a white car.

    :)

All cars look the same to me these days.
