Oh dear! Hope it is a false alarm.
I do wonder what good can an escort plane do in mid air? Ground forces can obviously be on stand by to greet the plane, but in mid air, what can they do, apart from observe?
If someone claims there is a bomb on board then it may escalate into a hijack situation I suppose, so probably standard practice to lauch a fighter just in case.0 -
Thank you all for the birthday wishes. I am scoffing a slice of cake from Paul. Unfortunately colleagues are also scoffing the rest of the cake.0

They can be really close, so if it does something mad, they can choose the spot to down them in.0 -

Really? You mean the RAF would blow up a passenger plane? In mid-air? Over some town in mainland Britain?

They could jump from the Typhoon onto the Airbus and then eliminate the terrorists or defuse the bomb. Like Bruce Willis.0 -
Apparently the plane has landed and has been positioned on the far end of the runway.

I saw a TV show where a group of I think journos were put in charge of cobra during a simulated terror attack on London and one option was to scramble fighters and take down the dodgy looking incoming flight before it was over London. It was altogether a very weird programme which I decided had been deliberately put out to misinform about uk readiness, it suggested amongst other things that underground flood doors had been installed on the tube so that a tunnel breach under the Thames could be isolated without the whole system flooding.....I think....0
