bleaching clothes / sheets

Well, I thought I'd be all moneysaving and instead of buying a red cardigan dye my old one red. This worked really well until I wore it over a white T-shirt yesterday and realised I can't have rinsed it properly.

So I now have nice pink patches on my white T-shirt :(

Stupid question but what is the best way to try and bleach it? Do I need a special kind of bleach or just the same kind you would put down the toilet? How much do I need to use?

The T-shirt is 95% nylon and 5% elastane.

Thanks :(

Dylon do a colour run remover for something like this, I'd give that a try first and if that doesn't work try Ace bleach which comes in a green bottle and is meant for clothes.

If you used an ordinary bleach you could end up with holes in your t-shirt instead :(

Don't use bleach on nylon/elastane - you'll find that the white goes grey and the pink will be a funny colour like purple!

I've never found a successful way of removing dye from nylon ... hopefully, another MSEer can help.

Can i just say, the red dye in your newly dyed cardi will continue to come out in the wash for ages - so its safer to wash it seperately for a time.

And make sure you wash it with a good couple of handfuls of salt too in a cold wash, this will help to fasten the dye in.

Oxyclean might remove the dye for you if you have some - but buying it for just one job is expensive. I bought mine before I found MoneySaving and hardly use it now. It's kept handy for the few things that vinegar can't fix! :)

Have you tried just washing the t-shirt? if the dye is so 'mobile' it might just move again

I bought a box of "Colour Catchers" from Tesco. It is a little sheet that you pop in the machine with your clothes. My daughter has a white t-shirt with red trim. Foolishly I thought it would be safe. The red has bled into the t-shirt although strangely not into the other whites. The t-shirt became almost pink instead of white. Earlier this week I put a colour catcher into the wash, to make sure really that none of the other whites got spoilt. The colour catcher came out red and my daughter's "pink" t-shirt is now white again. That was a much better result than I could have hoped for.
