Welcome to the world of mucky kids :rotfl:

FACT - Washing powder doesnt remove 99.9 % of all stains however much you pay for it, (I now one half the price of the expensive ones)

I wouldnt use bleach as in the long run I have found that fabric doesnt wear so well.

I cold soak everything first and if necessary put the item in a bowl of water with one of the OXY stains removers with warm water so that it bubbles through the stain, then wash.

Send in a painting apron/old shirt to school as poster paints dont come out. DD recently bought a new outfit bright yellow, lovely it was until I had to dye it blackas she got poster paint on it

Despite the short sleeves, and the painting shirt, the shirts are *filthy*!

Thanks for your replies Kaz, but I don't have any OXY products (are these worth investing in?), are there any other products or methods that people use to get general grubbiness out of shirts?
  • A tip I got from my ex-MIL is to dissolve a couple of Steradent tablets in a large bowl of hot water and soak the washed whites in it. Brings them up brilliant white. Then just rinse and dry and iron as normal.

My son has what I assume are pencil smudges all over his school shirts. I think they're caused by him leaning over the tables which are covered in pencil marks. They just won't come out. I've washed them at 90, used all the stain removers under the sun -makes no difference.

I think schools would be doing us all a service if they required the children's shirts to be grey as well as the skirts and tousers

but I don't have any OXY products are these worth investing in - I think so and I'd rather use the cheap powder and an expensive stain remover than expensive powder all the time which isnt guaranteed to work.

dissolve a couple of Steradent tablets in a large bowl of hot water = I think its the fizzing action that helps remove the stain - like the Oxy products. Could try a spoonful of Bicarb of Soda

My son has what I assume are pencil smudges all over his school shirts - Have you tried using a rubber, just a thought havent tried it.

OH YES i use cheap store brand powder and buy the biggest oxy crystal ( mr T often has this for about £4 ish rather than the £6 ish so i buy it up then) I use 1 scoop with most white washes at 40 or for a stubbon looking stain i use 2 in the wash though if i do that i tend to use a bit of fabric conditioner too ( i use a 2in 1 powder but found the little extra when using the oxy works better) I sometimes use it on my lights too but only 1/2 scoop.

i used it on a white t shirt the other day when a stain after 2 washes had not come out and rubbed it in with my finger and left it for 1/2 hour and it came up a treat.
    Still Trying :o

  • For work I have to wear a white uniform, it says that it can be washed at 90 degrees. A college I work with told me that she bleaches her's every so often to keep them looking white. Does this mean she literally gets a bowel of water, puts in some normal bleach then adds the uniform to it
    Virgin CC=£2652, Next= [STRIKE]£102.88,[/STRIKE] Very=£475.60, Natwest=£800, Sainsburys CC=£1777.02, Lloyds CC=£498.29, Lloyds Loan= £13,946.18, Car=£4000Total = [STRIKE]£26,147.23[/STRIKE] £23,849.09:eek:
  • Might do. I wouldn't leave it in too long and dilute the bleach there are instructions on most bottles.
