It's an address used by Royal Mail. The company are not in Derby.

That's as may be, but I still think that lots of people can't get to a postbox / afford stamps etc .
If ITV *wanted* to be truly fair, they'd offer postal AND web, but they don't, so they won't!

How do expensive text-only comps get away without the 'free' entry?

E.g. the Planet Rock ones - https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5059505
£1 + SNR for text entry, and no other options.

Is the argument / excuse (?!) there that Planet Rock don't get any of the £1 charge?

As far as i'm aware, there are a few ITV winners on here who won via free online entries.

Not just the free ones.
Where I worked we used to use postcard entries to get the boiler room fire started in the morning.
