OP, please don't be too alarmed by some of the paranoid posts here.

I assure you that your local police have no interest in fitting you up for a very minor crime you haven't committed. What would be their motivation?

If you have hit something/caused damage, then clearly you didn't mean to and I'm sure you'll learn from this and be more aware in the future. If you haven't hit anything/caused any damage then no harm done!

Thank you person one for your kind words. I know the local police are far too busy to make crimes up!

Your last paragraph sums up how I feel exactly. (but no beer when driving of course!)

How rude to suggest that some of the posts are 'paranoid'.

    !

Just incase you were including my post in the 'paranoid' group, the above was not what I was implying.

Had an awlful incident in a Tesco petrol station over a year ago now.
I was just pulling away from refueling also towing a large trailer. Somebody had gone back to the petrol pump area with an assistant to query there petrol ticket....there was no vehicle with them at this point but what happened was they stepped for just a sec maybe between my vehicle and the trailer as I was pulling away and what persued was the trailer clipped the person leg without my knowledge. They both shouted after me which I heard and stopped to see what was the reason was and had just a few words over this...no mention of any injury so having spoken to them both and all seem ok I carried on out of the fuel station. It was months later that I got a letter from the police with a request for me to contact them. Result was I invited them for a discussion to my home and all was sorted with them..i.e. no charges. Later though My Insurance company told me I have to say it was my fault because it would cost so much to take to court!!!I declined that suggestion but the end of the story is they paid out an injury claim anyway, although to this day I have no idea how much because I cannot get any response from them since I changed Companies over this. I lost a lot of my NCB which obviously increased my Insurance cost a great deal but cannot altogether repair the feelings I felt over this.

Oh please! You're either guilty or your not. I get the impression that if OP is given evidence that she did cause an accident without realising it, she will want to take responsibility for it anyway.
Your ignorance of police practice is showing...A solicitor will stop you getting a careless charge or maybe failing to report a accident ect ect...If you go in opening your mouth then you only have yourself to blame when you get charged...Policing is a numbers game these days...But you knew that didn't you..
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

Oh guys, please don't argue, it's helpful to have lots of viewpoints, I can see the advantage of taking a solicitor in with you, but I guess I've been bought up with the (no doubt naïve) thing of if you need a solicitor you must have done summat wrong thinking.

I'll wait and see what happens. It may not come to that. I'm happy to produce all my documents if needs be and will take it from there.

I'll update when I find anything out.

Absolutely have a solicitor if you don't have significant experience and a good understanding of the law. It does not in any way signify guilt.

Obviously we don't have much to go on! So this is more general advice. But should the police offer to let you "get away" with a "Caution" (either simple or conditional), do not sign it. This does go on your record and indicates guilt. You would need to discuss this with your solicitor and not rush into anything.

Generally speaking, don't sign anything quickly and without talking to a solicitor.

But it should be fine. They might just want to ask if you witnessed something that happened in proximity to your vehicle! Your "sorry, no" answer should be plenty, but the MSE in me would make sure that I at least got a coffee at the station for my trouble. Maybe a biscuit, too! :)
Q: What kind of discussions aren't allowed?
A: It goes without saying that this site's about MoneySaving.

Q: Why are some Board Guides sometimes unpleasant?
A: We very much hope this isn't the case. But if it is, please make sure you report this, as you would any other forum user's posts, to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.

Well, interesting! OH woke me up at 2am this morning (!) as he'd remembered that my DD was at a party on the 30th May (I've checked FB this morning and yes, she deffo was).

This is significant as hubby drove - I dashed in to pick DD up from the sports centre and got her changed. We did this as the party location has little parking so he could wait whilst I dropped her off. We also have a witness as he saw a friend whilst waiting.

Whilst I know this doesn't prove that my car wasn't there, it makes it unlikely. Feel a lot happier!

I was there between 3.50 and 4.10ish pm, but the letter from the police states 5.30 - 6.30.

If this alleged incident took place on sport centre ground surely that is on
private property and not on a Public highway? I wasn,t aware you could be prosecuted for careless driving on what is effectively private property?.

    WRONG.

This kind of nonsense answer is why it's not worth asking for advice on an open forum.

People state things as fact when they are guessing or remembering something someone else has told them.

OP - it's simple enough. You've checked the details on the letterhead and they are authentic. Just provide the answers and wait for a response.

People here are just going to confuse things as we all don't have the facts.
