What a ridicuous assumption! In any case, why do you believe that the victim was driving a car? Last week-end, I almost got run over by a car reversing from a parking space as she didn't see me on my bike (clearly going by the sound rather than looking properly). I avoided her but by doing so, hit my husband who was riding next to me. Thankfully, we were fine, but she continued to reverse and left without stopping, and seeing how she seemed to keep looking ahead of her, I am not convinced she had a clue of what she did. She was reversing without due care, and even though I would have loved to be going 30mph, I unfortunately haven't yet reached that speed!

Eeeek  That sounds bad. Glad you were both OK. What a clumsy mare.

  • A letter ? In such circumstances, I would have expected a knock on the door.

Same. It seems a bit odd.

Have you examined the surfaces of your car?

Some years ago I received a letter purporting that I had hit another car in ASDA car park six moths earlier.
I 'close-up' photographed all round my car to prove there were no abrasions as always there's an exchange of colour where anything is supposed to have been in contact.
  • The below post is spot on, all you need to do is fill the back in (if it's the pre-printed form type) or sometimes there's a section on the bottom instead. Fill in the driver details but then add an additional piece of paper explaining that whilst your vehicle was in the car park at the time/date stated you are not aware of having been involved in any collision.

It's totally normal to deal with this type of incident this way and the only way you would have got a knock on the door (as the registered keeper, after all they have no idea who was driving) is if somebody had been seriously injured or if there were other offences they were investigating.

There are thousands of this type of incident reported every single day up and down the country and even if there were the resources to knock on the door of every single one (which there aren't) is this really the best use of Police resources? They knock on your door and you say 'yes, I was there but know nothing of a collision' or they write to the registered keeper and you reply the same.

It is a standard request for the name of a driver where an allegation has been made. It will almost certainly be someone who claims you bumped their car in the car park.

At this stage the registered keeper is required by law to name the driver - once that is done, they may get invited for interview, but in minor cases the insurance companies are usually left to sort it out.

Name the driver - but it doesn't do any harm to enclose a letter stating you are unaware of any incident involving your car at that time/location.

Failing to name the driver is a far more serious offence that can get you a big fine and 6pts - so don't ignore the request.

the burden of proof is on the person who made the complaint. if you are sure you didn't hit another vehicle or person then just DENY that you did so unless they produce the 'proof'.

Someone I know had a car reverse into her in a shop carpark last week.....

........she was on foot and banged on the boot of the car as it hit her (going slowly thankfully) but the driver STILL didn't notice her and drove off, totally oblivious

If it is in a car park the police should not be involved if there is no injury to anyone.

Not true. As the car park is a public place, the Road Traffic Act applies.

Regardless of whether someone was injured or not, failing to stop and provide details at the scene of an accident is an offence and that is why the police are investigating.

Thanks for all the replies, I'm sorry some of you have had bad experiences.

I'm adamant that I didn't hear any bangs/crashes etc, but in a busy car park obviously speeds will be minimal anyway. I'm hoping that nobody was hurt in anyway - I feel sick at the thought of it, but I'm thinking there would have been a knock at the door if that was the case.

Obviously I'm not perfect so technically, yes, I could have done something that caused someone else damage, but without more info I'm a bit stuck!
