I downloaded an app yesterday for the C25K.
I joined a gym a few weeks ago in order to slim down as I have become chubby since quitting smoking in July. My work friend has persuaded me to do the Tough Mudder in September next year! (Which gives me until September to be able to run 12 miles) but has now decided that we are doing Rock Solid in Exeter in March. That is 14 weeks away  and we're going for a 15K .
I start my training tomorrow with the dog. She is only 6 months old so will probably break my neck by getting under my feet!
I'm very lucky that I have a nice selection of 2 types of beach nearby and the prom and the woods with good pathways so I can choose where to run depending on how I feel.
My major motivator is to shift the enormous belly and backside that have appeared over the last few months!

So I did my first attempt using the app today. Someone sent me a text 9 minutes in and the bliddy thing dumped me!
I have just ordered a new phone so will investigate how I can use this old phone as an MP3 and run the app. At least that way I won't keep getting dropped.
Running with the dog on lead was a pain too, she'll be far easier on the beach but I had no option today as I had to run along the path near where DS has his trumpet lessons.

    I did it!
With my new phone contract, I get some free head phones. I have gone and found the nhs couch to 5k podcasts now and am in the process of downloading it to my phone. Hopefully I will have some music to listen to then until I persuade DH to teach me how to get music onto my phone that is!

  • Kaz, Well done on getting started my phone was always crashing with the podcast and I had to guess how long I had run for. I started in the summer and completed the course loving it. Got into running 5K 3 times a week until an achilles injury. So my advice is to stretch after every run, in particular heel drops.:j I am slowly getting back into it but it is so frustrating when you can't run. (Never thought I would feel like that when I started)
  • Hi everyone! Newbie here, I've never run properly in my life. I'm quite an active person, having horses to slave after as well as competing one of them. Things wind down in the winter, and as there's less to do I appear to be going into couch potato mode. I would also like to improve my general fitness as I feel it would help my riding. If I had the room in my house I'd get a cross trainer or something, but unfortunately no space. I also looked at joining a gym, but blimey they're expensive! I thought, well running costs nothing but trainers, so maybe I should give it a go.

So, some questions. I've just downloaded a C25k app. Are there any particular trainers I would need? I have strange knees and ankles, very hypermobile ankles, which also seem to get a random stabbing pain when I run, and also a similar pain in my kneecaps. Not every time, but it's like something is going ping. Fingers crossed I can just work around this, I'm 29. I'd have to run after work, which means running in the dark. In theory I have the perfect running track right behind my house, a disused railway line which is converted to a footpath. Unfortunately I'm nervous of running / walking along it by myself after dark! I supposed I'd have to run on the roads, which are at least lit. Sorry for the ramble!

If you use an app, you could always listen to the radio if you don't have any music on your phone

Well, having been thwarted by Christmas, laziness and work commitments, I have not had a chance to get back out. I worked last night and have been feeling really meh recently so know I need to get up and get moving. So this morning I got home and dragged the dog out for her second C25K.
The poor dog has never seen frost before so the park was interesting for her and she didn't seem too keen on the -2.5 degree temperature but we both survived!
I really. can't see me being fit to do a 15k (or even a 5k if I'm honest :o) by March 22nd. But, I will keep on trying. I have put on a stone since the summer and have put on 1.2kgs in the last 3 weeks. Although only out on 1cm around my belly but I feel so wobbly everywhere :(.
Never mind, running is only part of my plan.
Dog is now asleep and I should be too!

  • you have about 13 weeks so if you train consistently i don't think it's impossible especially if you just focus on doing the distance and dont get hung up about the time

it will be important not to overdo things and pick up some sort of injury though that would prevent you from training
