Quorn a cheaper Meat alternative

    A lot of people, including my fiancee, are allergic to Quorn.

    It also uses egg product as a binding agent, so is not acceptable to vegans.
    If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5? :)

    ^ think they are doing a trial of a vegan range, sure I read something this week about that.
    Not the OP will be bothered, being a meat eater though!
  • My DD is a vegetarian (has been for about 25 years since a teenager) and when she was younger we often cooked dishes using Quorn. However, although I didn't mind it, DH and DS objected strongly! Now there is just DH and I at home I occasionally use the Quorn mince for Bolognese or Chilli but it certainly doesn't work out cheaper than using beef mince, even when I can find it on offer. It's just less fattening when I go on a health kick!

    I don't understand vegetarians who eat egg products. They don't want to eat animals but they are happy for 1000s of male chicks to be killed. Vegan is the only way.

    Quorn is not usually cheaper than meat. At least in my experience. I'll just go to my butcher and ask for some real chicken. Wings and legs are only £2-£3 a kilo. Breast meat is £5-£6 kilo. Quorn today is £3 kilo for chicken style pieces at Tesco which is a good price and the best price I've seen. I have tried it and I did not like it.

    Dont get how some veggies think that they are eating healthier food, that sort of thinking is a joke. Fat is very good for you, (butter is even becoming fashionable amongst the mainstream dieters even) the body uses fat as a energy source......sugars are the enemy generally.
    The veggies I know all eat far too many refined carbs such as pasta and bread and not enough protein or even green veg.

  • Qorn is not cheaper than meat, and even if it were I would still eat meat as it´s a natural product (one of the very few natural things in our diets) where as Qorn is highly processed cr*p. I can`t see why we would need to add even more processed, unnatural junk to our diets.

    I'm a veggie but the rest of the family aren't so I do a mix - some dishes I will do with a meat substitute and sometimes I'll cook two separate meals (or just do without the meat on my plate). I really prefer Quorn over meat because I don't like the inconsistency of meat. I've recently found that some of the Tesco brand Quorn-type stuff is really good and quite a bit cheaper. Their chicken style pieces, although very rectangular which makes them look like children's food, are much nicer than the Quorn chicken style pieces. I don't like the beef ones but I don't like the Quorn 'beef' either so maybe that's just me.

    For us it's definitely cheaper to do all meat-substitute meals than to cook two separate things and I think it's probably cheaper to buy Quorn at full price than to buy the same amount of cruelty-free organic (for those who want natural!) meat and definitely cheaper to buy the Tesco 'meat free' range, but I'm not sure if it'd be cheaper than buying value meat with dubious origins! The fact that a lot of it comes frozen and can be cooked (quickly) from frozen is also a big thing in favour of fake meat for me - no wastage and minimal cooking time.

    I'm allergic to penicillin, but I'm OK with Quorn. The southern fried burgers are OK but it's bland processed stuff and not cheap.
