Quorn a cheaper Meat alternative
A quick question. How many of you - normal carnivores - supplement your weekly shop for meat with quorn products to keep the cost down?
I bought some chicken style pieces which were on offer the other day and and realised they were a lot better than I expected.
If so what do you cook with it?

Only Quorn I can stomach is the burgers. Keep on trying the rest hoping one day it will actually have some kind of texture but alas no.0

As a general rule, no.
Firstly because it's a highly processed Soylent Green type concoction and secondly, it's actually quite expensive.
Yes, you could pop along to Tesco right now and buy a 500g bag of chicken style pieces at half price for £1.50. But that's still £3.00 a kilo, and I can buy real chicken breast pieces in Farmfoods for that kind of money. It's normally more expensive to buy Quorn than the actual meat alternative for which it is supposed to be a substitute.
And then again, you might be one of the few that are actually allergic to the stuff.:)0 -
The film exposed dead people being turned into protein.
Very MSE though. lol0 -
Quorn is disgusting. It makes me ill if i eat it. It's made from mould, why would anyone want to eat mould ?0

I'm allergic to Penicillin which is probably why Quorn makes me ill.0 -
I wouldn't eat quorn, i don't like its manufactured taste and consistency.0

Soylent Green was most definately NOT a vegetarian alternative
Ah yes, perhaps it was wrong of me to imply that there was anything non-vegetetain about the stuff. The 'Soylent Green' image always springs to mind because Quorn is similarly produced by an industrial process in massive vata and because its manufacturer is similarly rather coy about the exact source of the protein..... It's made from mould, why would anyone want to eat mould ?
It's made from a microfungus. But then mould is a microfungus. So basically, yes. Of course penicillin is also made from a microfungus, so it's not all bad. In fact I think there are a number of things made from moulds and suchlike that find their way into the food chain.Quorn is disgusting. It makes me ill if i eat it....
It's possible that you are one of those people who are allergic to Quorn.0 -

I haven't bought it for a couple of years but I've eaten a lot in the past albeit as a veggie than a meat eater. I loved the taste - first ate it as a meat eater when I had the mince in a bolognaise served at a health farm and was very impressed. The mince works well on a 'supreme' type pizza too, just needs flavouring like garlic, herbs etc and it's obviously not got the fat like meat mince when cooking. It's easier than meat as cooks from frozen etc so quite convenient. Chunks work well in fajitas or stir fries. Burgers/sausages tasted really good.
They do their own Quorn cookbook which is actually quite good if you're looking for ideas.
Morrisons used to regularly have offers for £1 so it's cheap when on offer if you watch out for the deals.0
