Apparently those ghastly companies that advertise on daytime TV for your unwanted gold similarly rip-off the stupid or unwary with silly prices.

Problem being Wonga are regulated ( I use that in the lightest sense of the word ) and so can be punished. PPCs are not - regardless of what the BPA might imply.

Regulated or not, impersonating a lawyer is an offence.

does it really make much difference if a letter comes from the creditor or their solicitor?

No, but it does make a difference, if the letter comes from a non-existent solicitor.

Tell me, what's the difference between sending letters from fake solicitors, and sending round a fake bailiff, carrying a fake Liability Order?

As long as they only sent the fake bailiffs, and fake Liability Orders, to people who had taken their money, and then were not repaying as they agreed to, that'd be OK, wouldn't it?

While you are at it, the fake bailiffs could take along a Doberman and a baseball bat.

After all, the people clearly deserve everything they get, for taking their money and then not repaying as they agreed to.

I have not seen one of those for a year or two, what channel so I can have a laugh.

The price of gold has now dropped, that's why many of those high-street shops and market stalls offering to buy the stuff have now closed. It's been reported that some dealers have been stuck with stocks of gold which are now worth less than what they paid for them.
What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?

Yes but no criminal charges have been brought yet. It was only possible to force Wonga to pay compensation without going through the courts because it's regulated, if it were in an unregulated industry (such as private parking) this wouldn't have been possible.

Dunno, I don't watch daytime TV, I've only caught the odd one over the years!

It's a sad indictment of our system of regulation that we even have these discussions.

How easy would it be to set out some basic rules, which all organisations would be bound by irrespective of the sector....

    - don't try to mislead anyone

    - don't harass anyone

    - observe citizens' rights

    - do what you agreed to do

    - work hard to fix any blunders you make

And if you can't do business without breaking one of those rules, don't do business,

    PPC wipeout time!
Please note, we are not a legal advice forum. I personally don't get involved in critiquing court case Defences/Witness Statements, so unable to help on that front. Please don't ask. .

I provide only my personal opinion, it is not a legal opinion, it is simply a personal one. I am not a lawyer.

    Indeed.

And the more I think about it, the more frustrated I am that we are born into a consumer society that doesn't have such completely comprehensive ideals.
