Now I may get flamed for this as it might be a stupid idea but DH has just bought the kids 5 litre bottles of squash which have a handle on the top. Is there any reason I can't use these? They are about 20 cm square and 40 cm high. I can see the main problem being that I would have difficulty getting the plant in but could I not unscrew the lid and put it through that way and then pack it out?

I always get Tumbler but there seem to be other varieties available suitable for Hanging baskets and pots. I have lots of plant catalogues. I will check on other types and get back in a couple of days.

  • Have tried both Tumbler and Tumbling Toms and prefer the latter for baskets and two is sufficient in a 12 inch basket. If you are only doing one or two baskets it is probably easier to buy them as plugs from your garden centre.

And please don't forget that tomatoes are very tender and should be protected from cold winds as well as temperatures below 10c, it might not kill them but will affect the crop you get later on.

I was given a kit to grow some tomatoes in a bag and I now have 4 lovely seedlings. It says I can leave them in the bag to grow, but I also have some hanging baskets with nothing to do, would I be able to put the tomatoes in a hanging basket as they are of the trailing (?) variety?

Have a look at previous tomatoes threads here on Greenfingers for some more advice.

There's an older thread about this, so I'll merge the two to keep all the replies together :)

So, after I've got the seedlings to come through, I plant them in individual pots, until they get to a height of around 6 inches?

At this stage, will they grow upwards by themselves?

When I transfer them to the hanging baskets, how do I train them over the edges? Are they vine-like? Will they just do this naturally, or do they need support?

    Thanks.

I bought 3 plants at the garden centre yesterday (dreaded moneymaker I'm afraid!) which I was going to plant out in a trough. At what stage do I need to pinch off the shoots though and how do I do this - from the sides or the top or both?

I did try and grow some last year but didn't get any fruit except for one tomato (from 3 plants!) which stayed resolutely green even after I picked it and left it on a sunny windowsill for weeks. I'm aiming to do better this year, and once I've cracked the technique can move to nicer varieties!

NIcki - the tomato will have leaves coming up the side from the main stem as usual, it is the shoots that grow from between these two that need to be pinched out. Pinch them as they grow but leave the main stem and leaves to produce the fruit. You will need to pinch out the top also after the fifth truss (young tomato bunch) has set.

Babykat - I think that if you plant them at an angle in the basket they will cascade over the sides, but depends what variety they are. Have you any idea?

  • I've had great success in the past with Gardener's Delight (a cherry tomato). They grew really well either in pots or a basket.
