what you say makes sense thanks, rustyboy, I do realise that part of the problem is that nectar and sainsburys only have half the info each ... I'd have thought betweem then they could sort it out ... these things would be simpler if sainsburys just had their own card like tesco's, boots and waterstones ...

(we found 3 cards for my mum with more or less the same number, a different number).

My now ex-wife and I had two cards on a Nectar account, she was the registered holder and I had an additional card but Nectar did not hold my details. From what I remember the card number that I had was the same as my wife's apart from the final two digits - I think the numbers on mine were 11 higher than hers (so if hers were 21, mine were 32).

Just a thought that the numbers you found could be part of a multiple account and someone else is the registered holder.

thanks fb1969 thats interesting and useful - we found 3 cards and the slightly different numbers might mean something like that ..
but my mum knew virtually no one any more - no relatives except me ... and the 3 similiarish numbers are totally different from the number of the card that got the points (which we haven't found as its not hers)

OP just a thought, but didn't you say that your mum used to phone her orders through? If so, they would most likely use the card number that they had on file for all the transactions. If , when she started doing telephone shopping, if she didn't give the card number to the operator, then one of them may have put their own in, or mis keyed the number and then every time she shopped, they would get the points on their card.

It is a weird one. We have joint cards, but all the vouchers etc come addressed to me, not my OH, even though he signed both of us up for them.

I've not heard of any alternative scenarios yet - that its a mistyping is a reasonable possibility but as I say the numbers are totally different.

    Ok how about this:

When your mum signed up for online shopping she had a Nectar card that wasn't registered, she put that card number in to the online shopping site and carried on as normal. She found another Nectar card that she'd already registered, in a drawer/handbag and threw the other one away, not realising that the two would not automatically be linked to her.

If it were fraud why are 3 years, £300, worth of Nectar points still sitting in her account? Surely if it were fraud the account would be empty by now, or at the very lease been emptied and refilled several times.

one of the staff putting their own card in is possible .. misskeying seems less likely as the card getting the points has a totally different number

    hi peachyprice,
well my mum didn't sign up "online" - she wouldn't know what the internet was - she used the phone.
according to your theory the card used was my mum's unregistered card ? well it is registered - to someone else (its actually also quite unlikely that my mum would throw anything away especially a card - she still has weightwatchers flyers from the 1970s, postcards from then, endless outof date cards)
the £300 aren't in her account they are in someone else's account (that £300 isn't totally from her deliveries either - some are from the actual card holder - I'd say only £50-£100 comes from my mum's deliveries), I don't see why you think the card owner need to spend the points for it to be fraud ?

Ah, I see, i didn't realise you actually knew that there is definitely another card holder.

I didn't say the points need to be spent if it's fraud, but it's unlikely anyone would leave fraudulently obtained points lying around for three years, that just increases the likelyhood of getting caught.

If it was a Sainsbury's employee wouldn't Sainsbury's have recognised the name?

So only £50-£100 worth are yours to inherit, not £300?

thanks, sorry not to be clear - yes nectar told me that a week and a half ago.

maybe I suppose but with £300 stashed it looks like this person doesn't spend points, I think even if they spend them there is a record of which nectar card got the points from which delivery ?

well Sainsburys haven't told me if they recognise the name or not (anyway I don't think Sainsburys actually have the name - nectar does, Sainsburys I think only knows the card number used for my mum's deliveries)
If I was a Sainsburys employee I'd use a friends card - and I'm not saying for sure this has happened but Sainsburys and Nectar seem very slow providing an alternative explanation.
So only £50-£100 worth are yours to inherit, not £300?
yes I think thats right, my mum spent about £50 a week ish every week for just over 3 years - I've loads of receipts still (with my mum not throwing much away) but maybe only a fraction of them,
thanks for your time with the comments

This is getting a bit confusing now and a thought has struck me.

How did you find out that there was £300 on the nectar account, if the card was not in your mums possessions? Did you have a nectar statement sent through, which brought this amount up? If it was a statement, then surely, the card had been registered in your mums name and address, so the argument by Nectar/Sainsburys's is unfounded.

If you haven't received any statements and don't have the card, how did you find out about the points accrued?

Sorry if you have already told us of this, my head is a bit fuzzy at the moment, so just quick read through the previous posts.
