Official MSE Insert:

It's possible to get a well-specced 2GHZ Dell laptop for £292, by forfeiting the the extended warranty. This takes £92 off the price, but obviously also means you'll have to pay (often a fair whack) if the laptop goes wrong after a year's time.

To get the laptop at the best price, click on mjr600's link below, then scroll down the page and change the warranty option from three years' cover to one year's. The price at the top of the page should now be £292.

If you don't plan to be constantly connected to the mains it'll be worth upgrading your battery to at least a 6 cell model. This upgrade is good value at £11.75, especially compared with the price you'd pay for the battery separately.

Thanks to mjr600 for posting this.

Perfect general use laptop at a bargain price; you may wish to add the 6 cell battery for regular mains free use.

15.4" Widescreen
1 gig ram
120 gig HD
ATI Radeon® Xpress 1150 HyperMemory Video
WiFi

With a further Quidco discount it's down to £279 !!

There isn't a better deal out there.

Adjust the warranty to get the best price.

I should add this is a brand new model only released onto the market this month.

Yes you're right.

Don't buy the Ram from them, if you need it there are much cheaper sources out there.

Where, I can't see that?

He said it is 2 Ghz, but that is the processor speed not size of memory.

I'm thinking of buying this laptop. I want to get Vista and Office also, (I have no disks - laptop hopefully will go for next 5 years so thought I might as well take the plunge for vista just now). Would this be a good deal to buy at £292 and add Vista + Office basic?

I'll maybe then order another 1 GiG RAM for it elsewhere - where is best eg Crucial?

I've bought this laptop, but amended the intial spec:

upgrade to AMD® Athlon™ 64 X2 Mobile Technology TK53
down to Base Warranty - 1 Year Business Hardware Support
up to 15.4" Wide Screen WXGA (1280 x 800) Display with TrueLife™
up to 9 cell Lithium-Ion Battery (85 Whr)
and it is £363.07 delivered

I wouldn't buy office if I didn't have it already, open office is a free alternative, it comes with Vista.

I am seriously considering formatting down to XP (home) until they get a Service Pack or two out.

It has two memory slots and they are both used in your chosen order; hence my 1GB comes with two 512mb sticks. To upgrade I will have to remove one so if I buy a 1GB stick I'll have 1.5GB after.

I've not considered where I'll do it yet.

But yes, I consider this to be a good deal, not so sure about the addons.

Why? ;) What does Vista give you that XP doesn't? What does Office give you that OpenOffice - which is absolutely free - doesn't?

Can you expand on this please? Microsoft certainly wouldn't supply OpenOffice as it's the elephant in the room they don't want you to know about. Does Dell sling it on instead? If so, finally something useful bundled by Dell! :D

Sadly familiarity. My wife will use this laptop as well, and she uses Office apps at work. I haven't seen open office so might google it to have a look at some screenshots. If it doesn't look too different to MS Office then I might consider it seriously - I don't want to have any problems with the wife though, shes v1.5 and there are no upgrades or new drivers available. ;)

Won't MS stop supporting XP in a few years?
