This is what frustrates me. I tried to get it with xp - the sales team all seem to be from an indian call centre, and are less interested in helping me than trying to make sure they get their commission.
They say they can give me xp professional, but i have to pay nearly sixty pounds more. They don't do an option for xp home apparently. Dell in the US give you that option but not in the UK.
I have already got a copy of xp I can use, but having looked up the procedure of installing xp onto a vista system, it seems it can cause driver isses and I don't feel confident enough to mess around with it because if I screw it up, dell won't want to know.
Vista is only the operating system not the computer. Drivers for other software should all be legacy compatibile with XP. If you do a clean instal (IE wipe off Vista and freshly load XP) - or simple ask them for a laptop without an operating system installed. You should be happily able to load XP and this will include all the XP drivers with it.A bargain is something you don't need at a price you can't resist.0 -

The one thing I don't want is Vista, and it gives no option for XP. This puts me squarely off of buying one of these even though I want one and have my credit card ready.
With Dell you used to be able to order via phone and ask for XP over Vista. Not sure if this is still the case.
Edit : just read above posting and you may have to go with XP Pro at extra cost.0 -
Thanks to all the posts about the laptop on here. Ive just ordered mine over the phone. I chose Vista but the woman advised you could change it to XP if you wish. I tried to change the Ram from 2x 512mb sticks to a 1GB stick, but they couldnt do it.
They will go onto ebay and I will get 2 cheap 1GB sticks!

I love this laptop, I think it would be perfect for uni. I don't have the full amount of cash, however I will have around £100 next week that I could put down on it. I've tried to apply for financing online, but because I don't earn over 10,000, I cannot apply for it. Do you think I would have any better luck emailing Dell and explaining my financial situation, stating that I can pay?Dooyoo £10.40/40, TopCashBack £17.19/30, Valued Opinions 50p/£10, Swagbucks 0/£20, Ebay £15/£250

Don't think this would work. However if you say you earn over £10k how will they know you don't?A shadowy flight into the dangerous world of a man who does not exist.

I don't wish to appear holier than thou but to do that would be a crime, Sect 15(1) Theft Act 1968 Pecuniary Advantage (devild you may wish to reconsider your signature with advice like that)
Whilst the chances are Dell would not discover the lie in the event that they did the applicant would end up with a conviction/caution, their credit score would be ruined for the future and job applications would be a challenge.
Nicolefury, it's a tough call if you want the laptop, it is an excellent price and perfect for a student, can't you stick it on credit card with 0% for purchases. If you use Quidco try for an Egg card there is £35 Quidco credit and 3 months interest free on purchases, with the extra Quidco money the price will come down to just over £230 !!0 -
I think ringing them up would be more effective than an email.0

Another option could be to wait until you have saved enough.
These deals come round fairly frequently and in the mean time use the Uni pc's (its more social than sitting on your own with a lappy)0 -
They wouldn't accept me for a credit card, mainly because I'm a student and I haven't got a steady income, yet I could pay for one. Plus, my parents would probably go mental at me for having a credit card, even though it's got absolutely nothing to do with them. Saving up would take months seeing as I've got uni accomodation to pay for and so forth.
Uni computers are mainly rubbish, and I'd rather be able to sit and do what I want on my own computer, rather than use some outdated tat in the library. Looks like I'm going without for a long long time.Dooyoo £10.40/40, TopCashBack £17.19/30, Valued Opinions 50p/£10, Swagbucks 0/£20, Ebay £15/£250
