Would you recommend this laptop for watching DVD's on?0

Would be fine for watching DVDs. If anyone is interested this new "vostro" laptop has exactly the same chassis design as the 1501 and 6400. Big pic:

At the of posting this the PCworld website seems to be down, probaly to many people browsing, if it don't work try later.
And in which way is this REFURBISHED compaq better than Dell????
All the seasoned techies on here and HUD seem to believe that this dell is the best speced laptop for that price but you seem to think differently for some reason.Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????0 -

AMD processors are highly underpowered and use a lot more power compared to intel's dual-core. They get outperformed on all benchmarks by a big margin by intel's dual core. THis does mean that there selling them cheap right now. If i was going to get a laptop with an AMD to compensate the processor i'd expect a decent dedicated graphics cards and a maybe a 17 inch monitor.

I have to agree with aiadi. Don't worry about the advertising, if you look at Dell's prices, they are very good and are widely regarded as being not only one of the cheapest PC brands, but also one of the best (for laptops anyway).
On the AMD/Intel point, AMDs are regarded as being better value than Intel from what I've read. I'm not sure what you're talking about comparing, but clearly you would need to compare a dual core AMD with a dual core Intel. A fairer comparison would be to compare what speed you get for a certain amount of money, and in most circumstances I expect AMD would come out top.
I would certainly not reccomend buying a refurbished laptop from PCWorld over this machine - the Dell's a bargain!0 -
Guys need some advice if poss.
Which is better for general surfing, email, Football manager and using excel.
The vostro 1000 with AMD® Athlon™ 64 X2 Mobile Technology TK53 1 gig mem or inspirion 6400 Intel® Pentium® Dual-Core T2080 Processor (1.73GHz,533MHz,1MB L2 cache), Genuine Windows Vista™ Business - English also 1 gig mem.

I'd say the vostro, Microsoft Works does not include excel ....so would need to buy a fullcopy of Office or download OpenOffice (free)Ex forum ambassador

I have a disc with office 07 on so thats not a problem. Taking that out of the equation would you still say go for the vostro? The vostro is £20 at £351 cheaper but comes with Vista basic while 6400 comes with Vista Business £371

I'm not saying there's actually anything wrong with dells, just saying there not as good value as a lot of people tend to think.
Here's the conclusion of the most comprehensive AMD vs INTEL i've seen.

Here's the start of the testing http://www.techreport.com/reviews/2007q1/cpus/index.x?pg=1 (about 20 pages long)but if you look through you see the difference.
AMD's use a lot more power (50Watts in general in item ) Which not only cost's more to run but more importantly for laptops, cuts the battery time. But when a corperation can't compete with a competitor, they no choice but to slash prices or risk major market loss.
I would highly recommend buying a refurbished laptop from PC World because,
1. You get better spec
2. If you buy online and have the item delivered, if you have any problems with it, you don't have to send it off. Just take it to your local PC World store.
3. No phoning Indian call centres that haven't gotta clue and who you can't understand.
4. Take a look at this http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@2022676135.1184405894@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccdjaddlhekihdicflgceggdhhmdgml.0&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null&sku=256230&category_oid=-28487 intel dual core for 279£ was in stock yesterday, sold out now though.
5. you have 14 days after the laptop has been delivered to take it back to pc world store for a full refund , no questions asked (Provided it is in "as new" condition.0 -
