Do you have particular knowledge of the [STRIKE]British[/STRIKE] English system of bus passes or, indeed, bus transport?

We can't use bus passes on National Express: to travel long distances someone would have to use a series of local buses.

It wouldn't be easy and it would be time-consuming.

Btw: strange topic to interest someone in Alabama.
In Scotland you can travel long distance, in fact you can venture into England as far as Carlisle or Berwick upon Tweed - and you only have to be 60 to get one ;)

Please don't alter my post. I think your situation is the same as in Wales. We can use local buses to travel the length of the country or indeed round the coastline. In fact as far as we want. But it would take a long time with changes etc.

We can also get a bus over the border, to Chester in our case.

I don't think you can use National Express in Scotland, can you?

I think you missed my point about an American telling us what to do,with our free buses.

It should certainly be first come first served.

But I disagree bus operators get paid very nicely for pass holders.

A local company gets 93p for each journey, down from £1.20 in 2008. The average fare is £1.80.

22% of passengers are full paying, 38% are pass holders and 40% are children/young people.

They've begun reducing or withdrawing routes used by majority pass holders and from a business point you can see why. One route is going where 77% are pass holders, when the average across the network is 33%.

I got told the other day it is 40p a journey by one bus driver. I've heard the bus passes will be going soon anyway. I should imagine back to half price fares which I do think is fair as nothing is free in life

  • I have no objection to paying something for my bus pass but one of the joys of having one is not having to scrat around for change. Therefore, not half fare when you get on the bus, but say, £100 per year by direct debit or £10 per month .

I think £1 a journey seems fair as it would stop most of the subsidies while putting a value on using the bus. As I've seen people use it for 1 or 2 stops before, which is crazy

Why is that crazy? It may be further than the person can comfortably walk!

Have to agree here, and also depend on distance between stops, may not be far in city, could be miles in country side
