Does a diesel equivalent be cheaper to insure compared to a petrol version? For example a 2.2 diesel have cheaper insurance to a 2.0 litre petrol? Diesels have a reputation for being slow and slow means good for insurance quotes or is this a myth?

If a buyer buys a cat D repaired car then how does the insurance companies know that it is a cat D car when the buyer gets insurance quotes for it?

How does the buyer know whether the insurance companies will cover Cat D car on insurance comparison sites like money supermarket?

what are the reasons why insurance companies refuse to insure cat d repaired cars?

No i find it the opposite. A 2L petrol is cheaper than a 2L diesel.

In fact some years back i could insure a 150bhp petrol turbo sports model cheaper than a 100bhp diesel engined version of the same car.

Hoes does the insurer know its a CAT D. Its either on the database or they may not know or bother checking until you claim and offer you much less than you think its worth.

How does a buyer know if they will cover it. The buyer asks them.

Because they dont want to insure it. They may assume rightly or wrongly that its been repaired on the cheap. Plenty of badly repaired cars out there.

Diesels used to be slow in the 1980's and much older. But things changed.

You can get a 2.5 ton 4x4 with a diesel engine that will do the 0-60 dash faster
    than your average small hatchback.

A cars speed has little relationship with its insurance rating.

Are all cat D write offs are registered on this database? Whats the name of this database? Is this VIC mark?

VIC means the vehicle must have its identity check to make sure your have not put the plates on a stolen vehicle and passing that off as the original one.

You wont have access to the database so what they call it is a moot point.

Can you spot a properly repaired vehicle? If not then dont buy one.

Ok so all Cat D cars are registered on the HPI database?

No matter how good the repair is on a Cat D car even though the repair is done at the main dealers the buyer cannot never take a Cat D status off a car meaning the car is stuck with the Cat D status for life?

Yep once its a CAT D its stuck there. Although back in the 90's i do remember something about a super MOT for accident damaged cars that would remove the marker.

It was extrememly strict though. If a panel had spot welds then the vehicle would fail if you seam welded it. Even though the seam weld maybe stronger.

They measured the chassis and running geat to make sure they were within manufacturering tolerances. So even a tiny unseen kink in a panel could cause it to fail.

They are cheap for a reason you accept that or dont buy one. Personally i would goto the auction and buy it in its written off state then get it repaired yourself.

You have some control over the quality of the repair.

Have you seen the state of some CAT D cars? Its not just scratches and little dents.
