Copy off any data that you wish to keep on the laptop. I'll pop the Windows XP SP3 disc for that machine in your Inbox.
Run a clean install from Boot.
Is it still running 256MB of RAM??

    Thank you nifty,

    The BIOS says
    memory 640KB
Extended memory 254 MB ....so I guess that's the RAM
    VGA memory 16MB

With the SP3 clean boot install... It wipes all data and all installed programs on all drives or just Drive C: ?
Is it a total reinstall of Win XP? Or just an upgrade?
Will I need the user registration code for Win XP?

If there are other partitions, then be careful to only delete and format the partition that contains the C: drive.

You won't need a key, as it's the recovery disc for ACER.

You really should purchase some memory for that machine. 256MB is no good.

Take it to 512MB or more.

Pop along to http://crucial.com. It will let you know what ram to buy, you can then buy from them or go elsewhere.

I was about to say, I found 2GB of ram for £40, which was cheap,

But nifty's price is really cheap

    I'll definately do an upgrade.

For what do you use the laptop if it is not connected to the Internet?

Once you've installed XP SP3 you can use a typical USB WIRELESS ADAPTOR (£3.59)to connect via WiFi.

It's been a long time since that was cheap.
Why are you advocating 2 x 512MB for a machine with only two slots? Not only does this deny the OP a RAM of 1280MB, it also means a further upgrade to 2GB would be uneconomic as both new sticks would be wasted

Usually you are on ignore and for good reason.

But for the sake of the OP....

    2 x 512MB(1GB) £7.99

    1 x 1GB £14.99

1GB of RAM is ample for that machine. I certainly would not advocate spending £30 on RAM on a laptop with that spec..at any time

Moving from 256MB to 1GB for £7.99 is better value than spending £14.99 to move to 1.25GB.
