Have had an interesting chat with the daughter bound for uni.
She's looking for a rough contribution of £400 a month for uni - she'll be entitled to a student loan 4750 and her halls are 4500
Its too far for her to live here and commute.
Split equally between her dad and me is what's expected.
Any thoughts?
Whilst I don't want her to starve and enjoy her first year.
She's no savings, has no intention of working as she's expected back to NZ for all the holidays.
*whilst I have my own opinions on this , unfortunately this is the reality I'm faced with. No amount of 'you should get a job' seems to be getting through to her.
So do I hand out £200 a month without questioning anything or scrutinising her budget no. Its been well :money: and I think her figures for things like food are utterly space cadet like. I've a mind not to.
I'm mindful that money shouldn't be just given without a second thought equally I want to support her.
DS has a job this year so won't be expecting any future help asdie ad/hoc. He got £100/month (for food) and the odd wee bonus, generally non-monetary.
Thoughts on a post card please.
PS She's switched from a medicine degree to an arts degree (lips tightly sealed here)

First off me thinks you need to revist the definition of "wee" - That's a beauty of a list but really far from wee!!!:D:D:DPippilongstocking wrote: »...£200 a month...4 YEARS 10 MONTHS DEBT FREE!!! Right, a difficult one, I would not give her £200 per month, I would go along the lines of matching any thing she earns / saves between now and uni, so when in NZ she can get a job and save!Breast Cancer Now 100 miles October 2022 100 / 100miles

Pippi I think it would be fair to contribute the same amount to your daughter as you did for your son. Maybe a wee adjustment for inflation but no more. Finding a part time job waiting on or similar would be beneficial in more ways than one.Nothing is so fatiguing as the eternal hanging on of an uncompleted task. William James0

Hey there thanks for the comments.
I know you're all right.
And I know what I think too, not dissimilar.
I've offered the same as DS (with optional food parcels) and said I'll help where I can but without a job, I think asking for £400/month is a tad excessive. I've also sent back a rejigged budget to her with a few cuts a few increases and said I think that £300 a month is more realistic with a £200/100 split between parents given the difference in our circumstances.
Kazwookie thanks for the input, she's not loafing in NZ I should have made that clearer. In NZ she's working for the (her other) family so not earning 'money' outiwth the home and she's needed at home to help with the bairns and driving to school etc) but they'll give her uni money.
Sigh and bigger sighs.
At least we're not in England where she'd need £9k a year for fees too on top of everything else, so we should be thankful for small mercies.
RT - exactly.
Elidee - -I totally agree, she's, I think got a bit of a reality check coming up. I brought them both up to value money. The other side of the coin is that she's expected 'home' for every holiday and expected to work for the family there.
I've suggested perhaps that needs to change.
I think learning the value of money is a key life skill. And, I've budgeted to support her identically to her brother, but not double.
Life eh. As if today's list wasn't long enough, now I have mulling and guilt to add to it!
