    yay chickens! :j :j :j

i didn't know about adding citric acid later either - my cordial is so sweet even i can't drink it and i have a notoriously sweet tooth!

although have so far solved problem by putting a load in my gooseberry jam.

oh, and i find that mixing it with a stiff gin and tonic takes away some of the cloying sweetness :D :rotfl:

    Chooks are amazing!!!!!

    A wee peek here.

7 eggs today, my word these girls are a bit quick off the mark!

Thanks for all the good wishes. Gals are settling in well and the dogs seem to like their new lodgers and finding them quite curious.

I got up at 6am to go and see them. They've not really got the hang of the house yet (they all slept under it) but we'll get there.

Oh well and I was going to get 2 or perhaps 4 but the lady asked if I'd consider 'saving' more so our basket comfortably fit 8.

    :D

More than I was originally hoping for but the poor wee state of them all made me cry, so I vowed to help as much as I could. It did make me greet all the way home, what a poor we state they were in. :(

    Softie me.

    :D

They look a mangled lot but I've been told they'll grow lovely feathers soon.

Had unexpected visitors last night which was lovely but meant a wee rummage in freezer and a wee change of plan re meals.

    All good.

We moved the shed up to the main garden (amazing what 6 strong folks can do) but had to 'hard prune' a large shrub bed to get the shed on site so quickly.

Lots of shrubs saved to repot and rehome.

Freezer now installed (2nd large one)
    Gate posts in
    Shed rehomed and levelled.

    Not a bad wee visit.

I fed them well, 'Grannies chicken' (shh don't tell the lasses) and we had scones for brekkie with HM sausages.

They're a good lot - must nip back into the fray.

Catch up properly later I promise!

Again thanks for all the good wishes and have a great sunday chaps

    :A

PS and I had my first egg today since Orkney. Man that's been a long month without eggs but I did it!

    Yay for extra chickens! :j :j :j

Our friends here had rescue hens, goodness me they looked bedraggled when they arrived but within a few months they looked all feathery and cheerful and spend their days happily ruining the allotment :D
  • Thanks so much for the chook link, Pippi. Poor wee souls indeed :( The sight of Scarlet has made me weep too and it reminds me why I must never, ever buy battery eggs. I would rather be egg-less. Thank heavens for people like you & DP who will take on these gentle creatures and nurse them back to carefree chicken-ness. I used to love helping my Grandad with his chooks when I was little but could never bring myself to eat them, only their lovely yellow yolked eggs. It made me smile to think of them lying under rather than in their lovely house and laying their eggs all over the place too :) They will soon realise they have fallen on their feet there.

I really popped in to say 'thank you' for the flatbread recipe you posted. I've never made them before but they were so easy. Like my pancakes the first one was a bit strange :o then as the pan got used to them the whole thing went like clockwork! I made a pizza for my lunch out of one of them and have frozen the others for later in the week. Yay to frugal lunch! :T
I have also pulled a few carrots and some tiny parsnips for tea and they are soooo lovely & fresh looking, I can't wait to eat them! Being so inspired and flushed with success at my first attempt at veg growing I have sown some more carrot seed in a big pot for later on in the year. Home grown tatties will be eaten tonight too....want to swap some for an egg, Pippi?? :D

    Happy Sunday :)

My parents rescued battery hens when I was in school. They wlooked a right state with no feathers and a "grid marking" on their sides from being in cages too small for them. They were terrified of us and wouldn't come near us. Fast forward a bit and all their feathers grew back and they even eventually ate out of my hand so there is hope for their feathers.

So exciting you've got chickens again. I really need to have a catch up on your blog.

Hope everyone is well this evening x

    Thanks for asking!

Instead of the magnificent four we've got the most eggselent eight.

Meet the lasses Big Red, Amber, Bold blue, Scarlet, Proud Purple, Gorgeous Green, Rose Pink, Braw Broon!

Scarlet (the most baldy and bedraggled one) seems to be in charge.

As they'll be a rainbow in our lives seemed only fair to name them after colours!

    :D

M21 thank you for such kind words and Starnac lets hope so cos they look quite baldy and horrible at the mo poor lasses.

Swaps Little Sweetie for a handful of tatties - some golden yolked eggs. Glad you're getting on so well with the veg - yay for repeat sowing. I hope they go well for you too. I'm so pleased the flat bread recipe was good and worked well. The first one is always a bit dodgy I find of anything!

Well done for having a go - they freeze well we tried last week!

Cheery shh don't tell mine they might run the joint :) what a thought. Scarlet will have Haggis doing all her chores, I'll bet.

    :)

*** mutters away as wants chooks again ****

 I'll buy half a dozen free range eggs and "accidentally" leave the receipt out so DH can see the price - then he'll realise having chooks again will be worth it.

    Thanks Pip - you're a genius

    I did nuffink. :T
