Lightening the mood a little, I have to report that today I've had 2 eggs.

I heard a cackling coming from the garden and when I went outside there was an egg. As Beryl was doing the cackling I assumed it was her egg laying on the lawn. I then went to the coop and found a second egg.

The egg on the lawn I think had just been laid, but it felt cold - is this right? I would have thought that new laid eggs would be warm ...

Don't use really fresh eggs for hard boiling though, they are very difficult to peel. The air pocket in a fresh egg is very small but as it ages, the air pocket gets bigger and it's easier to peel. See here for info on eggs...

Thanks for the clip, I shall certainly try Myrtles dancing queen skills with suitably poppy song later today.

Had a frantically busy few weeks so have not had time to visit all my favourite sites. I've just popped in briefly to see if moanymoany had got her hens. And found a photo too. And you've had eggs. I can remember our First Egg. The kids voted to fry it and we had in on a piece of toast - cut up so each member of the family had a taste of the white and the yolk.

Enjoy your hens Moany! I'm glad you've got 3.

We've had the hens now for 4 weeks and they've been laying for 3. So far we've had 35 eggs.

Sadly, we cannot let them roam the garden. Clearly, they were allowed to watch the most unsuitable films as chicks. They must have included 'The Great Escape', as they made constant bids for freedom. They now have a lovely run. Even so, they still try to escape whenever they see an opportunity.

The run is near my washing whirly line, whenever I go to hang out the washing the three of them come running up to see me, clucking and crooning. They are so amusing.
  • I have wanted to keep chickens, but hadn't broached the subject with hubby. Yesterday morning he started work late & I cookied him a full english before he went, he suddenly said 'Why don't you keep chickens, then we could have really fresh eggs' After I picked myself up off the floor, as he's a townie through & through. I said OK, he's now looking for chicken run plans online.

Methinks Myrtle and her feathered sidekicks have some explaining to do - they're in for competition on the escapology front it seems! :rotfl: Now what was that song - "You'll never sqawk alone" - could bring a whole new meaning to The Dawn Chorus.
