neighbours tree is starting to block the view of the valley from my house

Why on earth were people having a go at the op? You don't get anything if you don't ask. There are some of us who thankfully have reasonable neighbours. Thankfully I have lovely neighbours that I wouldn't change for the world. I let my southerly neighbour knock down a chunk of my front wall because he kept scratching his car on it....no skin off my nose, the wall isn't a feature, is only down one side of my property and so serves no purpose in keeping animals in/out, he lets my window cleaners stand on his flat roof so they can clean my conservatory roof. My northerly neighbour spoils my son rotten and has done for the past god knows how many years, as he's now a strapping 14yr old and she's late 80s, he cuts her front lawn for her because she struggles and find him an hour later in her lounge being force fed milk and biscuits. He made her and the next neighbour along (another little old lady) Crepes the other day and they sat in neighbours garden drinking tea, eating Crepes and putting the world to rights, it was quite sweet really. It's give and take.0

It never fails to amaze me how selfish people can be, sounds like a classic case of I'm alright Jack I have a lovely view but I'm going to make sure you don't - just because I can. Trees this size belong in a wood or a forest, NOT a domestic garden. Shame on those who think it's ok to be so selfish with no respect for others, I guess they are 'tough thickies'. My advice would be trim them back to hedge height if you can before they get much higher and don't forget to leave him the offcuts, don't want to deprive him now do we. Good luck!0

Like others, you have made presumptions without knowing the full details, and we're not going to get those, or a picture. We're also only getting one side of the story.
Take my neighbours, for example, they could post on here that I have lovely views, yet I choose to block one of theirs with my large high top van. That's certainly true.
However, my neighbours, though nice enough to speak to, and generally considerate, are totally oblivious to some of the niceties of living beside others. If the van were not there, I would see their dead barbecue, clapped-out mower, expired hoover and a swinging seat made from parts of an old pink leather suite.
I prefer the van.
One day, when renovations at that end of the house are finished, I shall put something more permanent than a van there. It will be unfortunate for the next person who lives next door, but this is how built landscapes evolve.
Trees can be a nuisance, it's true, but people have a need for privacy, and trees are typically more pleasant to behold and better for wildlife than the built alternatives.0 -

And that advice would leave Polly open to a charge of criminal damage.0 -
Better still, invite his wife around for coffee, she will change his mind.
If all else fails, spill diesel on roots.0 -
The number of people on here - including some whose tagline states how fair they are - advocating illegal, vandalous, destructive acts is almodt unbelievable.
Would "my neighbour parks his car (legally) outside my house" get responses of "scratch it with your keys", "let his tyres down", "put cat poo on the air vents"? Oh, if I remember, one did, not all that long ago.
This tree is well inside the neighbour's property. It does not interfere with the OP's property. It was there when she bought the house, there is absolutely no obligation whatsoever for it to be trimmed. The right to a particular view does not exist; indeed, many may prefer the view with a tree in it.
It's quite scary how arrogantly so many would just take illegal and antisocial direct action.0 -

You mean, aside from massively reducing the value? That sounds like interference to me...It was there when she bought the house,
...but it was much smaller.there is absolutely no obligation whatsoever for it to be trimmed.
There's no *legal* obligation....which is whyso many would just take illegal and antisocial direct action.
Personally, I think it's scary that you'd be happy spoiling someone else's enjoyment of their home and possibly ruining their finances, just for "I want, I want, I want"...Are you a two year old? Most people learn about playing nicely with others around that age...0 -

Says who? Frankly, I doubt it'll affect the value. I'm pretty certain the use of here "massive" is beyond ridiculous.but it was much smaller
Shock horror! Trees grow!! Leylandii-type grow fast!!!!! OMG.... trees grow upwards... and outwards.... Whoda thought it???!!! Anyway, much smaller? Four feet smaller, I thought... that doesn't sound like "much smaller", unless it was a bush! There's no *legal* obligation....which is why
people take illegal action.. like pouring diesel on the roots, ringing the tree, breaking it in half (it's sooo big, after all).... And that makes sense to you how?spoiling someone else's enjoyment of their home and possibly ruining their finances
If they are unable to enjoy their home because of one tree and one view... ruining their finances??? Blimey, are you on something? It's a tree. In. Somebody. Else's. Garden!!!
In this situation, as the OP, I'd ask. If I was refused, that would be an end to the matter.
As the neighbour, if asked, I'd certainly consider the proposition. If I chose not to cut the tree (which was there, and could be expected to grow, and may add to my enjoyment, and, for all we know, may add to the enjoyment of many others), that should be an end to the matter. No blackmail ("cut it or else"), no underhand getting a mate to snap it, no illegal trespass, vandalism, destruction. We don't know in the slightest the reasons the neighbour chose not to cut the tree. We have no idea what improvement to his, and others' view it may make.
Funnily enough, I don't think I'm the one posting like a spoilt brat here.0 -
What's wrong with just trimming the branches overhanging your hedge back level to the hedge every 6 months or so. I'd have thought you're entitled to trim anything which is in your own garden. Any inanimate object (like a tree for example) that remains in your neighbour's is none of your business and if it is upsetting the karma of your life that is your problem not his.0

No moral anchor- self, self, self, manipulation, self.- Welcome to the human race!
Oh btw OP - hoping your neighbour would pop their clogs?
