Part of what I bought here was the view. I had got out the map of local area and thought "betcha they build on that part of the view in my lifetime - darn them" and "that part of my view should be safe for my lifetime", as in working out likely deemed "infill sites" in the area and my own projected population growth figure over my estimated balance of expected lifespan.
Cue, I moved in and have generally talked-around this and Yer Local Opinion chimes exactly with what I thought would be the case and there is very low likelihood that any individual could worsen things during that time.
But that is, to a degree, somewhat of "luck rather than judgement", as I have projected "Possible population expansion nearby in my lifetime somewhere between o% and 50%" and even worst case analysis of 50% should see the bit of my views due to remain clear doing so.
Individuals (ie like OP's neighbour for instance) are more difficult to protect against. Most I have are just fine etc etc, but there is always The One and I have a "The One" myself and it is difficult to know just what to do about someone like that and anything they might do to damage the home set-up you have bought into....(personally, I work on a "bribery and corruption" take with everyone except The One....ie presents and favours liberally distributed LOL).0 -
The simple fact is that the view does have an effect on a house.
A friend of mine had a house that he bought with a beautiful view of green fields. When the council freed up the land for building and a contractor built 300 houses on those fields, he had to drop the asking price over and over before he made a sale.
The house was worth more with a view of green fields, than it was with a view of 300 houses. EA's told him if he had sold a year earlier (before the use of the land was changed), he would have been tens of thousands better off.0 -
I can well believe it.
One of the (many) reasons for selling my last house was because I felt so hemmed-in. All those buildings looming down upon me and one of the last straws was a bit of what tiny tiny bit of "view" I had had been built on and I felt like I might as well be in prison for all the "openness" I had.
The thought hadn't occurred to me when I had bought the house many years back. The reason for that was because it was/remained in my book A Starter House and therefore I knew I would only have it for a maximum of 5 years (7 if you really stretched it and things had gone drastically wrong).
When you buy a Starter level House you probably aren't too concerned with an awful lot of things (views included). However, when it is a "Second Step House" or "THE Final Home/Step In Ladder" then it matters. It matters a lot, because you know you wont be moving on.
To me, my guess is that OP is in a Second Step House and therefore it Matters and will matter to anyone she decides to sell the house onto.
Think that may go some way to explain those who are saying "What the heck? Doesn't matter" (ie they are still in Starter Houses and/or are happy with Starter Houses) and those who say "It matters...bigtime" (ie those who have moved on to, at least, Second Step Houses) will understand exactly where OP is coming from.
Yep...timing matters too on that one, ie before or after Destruction Will Come Time has been set (eg Council has decided to "build on the view"). A friend of mine was only telling me literally hours ago that a house of hers had lost £200,000 in a matter of 6 months because of external factors:eek:. It is indeed a fact that there are a variety of External Factors that will affect "higher up the ladder" houses that would have little or no impact on Starter Houses.
When you buy a Starter House you are buying a Transient Possession. When you buy a "higher up the ladder" house then you are, very likely, buying A Home. BIG difference in what you expect and what will upset you if its tampered with by external forces.0
