  • Poor little koalas - I think I'm going to be on mitt-making duty this weekend!

Are any of you TOTM sufferers able to use Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptives such as Mirena or Nexplanon? Since using LARCs (~15 years now) I've not had a period and only get cramps a couple of days a month instead of a full week...

I can't take any hormonal contraception. My body just can't process synthetic hormones and I get fat and cry all the time.

  • The only thing suitable for me was the combination pill which reduced it to a very bad TOTM rather than the state of me without it. I took it through my working years but then my blood pressure went too weird so I had to come off of it. I can't have anything that can cause blood pressure rises and I can't use coils- Penguin bit! - because my abuse left lots of scar tissue inside which is partly why my TOTM is so bad, the blood doesn't run freely out and pools, hence the cramps. End Penguin! Between the penguin, high blood pressure and fibroids I am pretty stuck with it.

  • Another thing that helps TOTM is battery powered & sold by Ann Summers.
And instead of changing every 15 minutes, you can use something designed to take flooding, ie the all encompassing incontinence pads which you can get on prescription. How to feel unfeminine when you are at your most feminine, I know, but to be honest they are grown up nappies, designed for the job and keep you dry, leak free and generally more relaxed. I have a relative who has an illness which necessitates her using these and found the "benefit" that they absorb everything. As she says, and many on here will probably agree, these conditions offer nearly all negatives so when there is a positive, go for it!

  • Oh heck :( admittedly, I'm heavier with the implant than without, but the benefits outweigh that (no pun intended!!).

I followed a few of the IFAW links to information about the bushfires and am sitting here sobbing :( Mittens are definitely en route ASAP!

Hello Solar! I was wondering how you were! I have considered incontinence pads, especially as it is meant to get heavier in peri-menopause? Heavier?! Tbh right now I sit and sleep on a binliner for 5 days a month so the glamour doesn't bother me! I should probably buy some at least for sleeping, right now I am up every 2 hours during the night and that isn't often enough.

When I took the combination pill I felt so much better and lost a stone in weight. It actually corrected one of my hormone balances. I was gutted when I had to come off it and went to a nightmare every month and all the weight and water piled on again although the water is better since I have been taking diuretics. It made such a difference that I had figured my legs were too fat for years to fit into my favourite boots, the zip wouldn't even meet. Six months of diuretics and they fit again easily and we are still slowly increasing the dose as there is still retention. My hormones are...interesting.

  • You might as well go the prescription route as you'e entitled. But first you need to find which style is best for you, such as here http://www.incontinencesupermarket.co.uk/index.php/sample

or via AgeUK - their samples are 99p each.

I sometimes feel I could write a book on these and happily I don't need them but have researched for those I know who do. Like how do you tell the front from the back when you can't see?

    I've been Money Tipped!
My periods are prone to being very heavy and I flood too. When I was discharged for hospital, many, many years ago near the beginning of my problems, they told fir to put absorbent pads over towels under me in bed at totm. I don't use absorbent pads now, but towels. This might only work if you are wedged into place between cats ( I can only go from back to side, I cannot sleep on my front, for example).

The moon cup was not a feasible solution for me for a few reasons.
  • I see my doctor next month so I shall talk to him about it. I had no idea that you could get them on prescription.

I have used towels but it got ridiculous, I went through 6 in 2 days and WaSp being a man has a slight problem with keeping them afterwards, nevermind washing them for me. Towels usually work from day 3 onwards but days 1 and 2 tend to be a mattress protector and a bin bag plus two super tampons at once. Not the most comfortable way to sleep...
